These capsules claim to support the body’s natural melanin production, potentially helping users achieve a deeper tan without UV exposure. For people in the UK, where sunshine can feel like a rare luxury outside of summer, the idea is understandably appealing.
But do these tablets really work? And are they worth the hype?
Here’s what the science says — and what actually happened when I tried them myself.
What Are Protein.com Tanning Tablets?
Protein.com tanning tablets are sold as a dietary supplement designed to support the body’s natural tanning process from within.
Rather than colouring the skin directly like fake tan or spray tan products, these capsules aim to help the body produce more melanin — the pigment responsible for skin colour and tanning.
Typical ingredients include nutrients involved in melanin production, such as:
- L-Tyrosine – an amino acid used by the body to produce melanin
- PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) – sometimes linked to increased pigmentation
- Copper – a mineral that plays a role in enzymes involved in melanin production
The idea is that by providing these nutrients, the body may tan more easily or more evenly when exposed to sunlight.
At least, that’s the theory.
The Big Question: Do Tanning Tablets Actually Work?
When it comes to supplements like these, the scientific evidence is still fairly limited.
Some dermatology research suggests certain nutrients involved in melanin production could potentially influence skin pigmentation. However, most experts say there is currently no strong evidence that oral supplements can dramatically darken skin tone on their own.
In other words, these tablets are unlikely to give you a full Mediterranean glow without any sun exposure.
What they might do, according to some users and anecdotal reports, is help the skin tan slightly faster or more evenly when you are already exposed to sunlight.
But expectations should be realistic.
The Internet Is Obsessed With Tanning Tablets Again
The recent surge in interest around tanning tablets is largely driven by social media beauty trends.
Creators on TikTok and Instagram have been sharing videos claiming they achieved a deeper tan or quicker colour after taking supplements like the ones sold by Protein.com.
However, dermatologists continue to warn that no supplement replaces proper sun protection, and any tanning process still involves exposure to UV radiation — which can damage skin.
So while the tablets might promise a shortcut to glowing skin, the reality may be more complicated.
My Experience Using Protein.com Tanning Tablets
I have the kind of skin that will tan eventually — but it takes ages.
And because I live in the UK, where sunshine is more of a rumour than a regular occurrence for most of the year, getting a natural tan is pretty unrealistic outside of holidays.
Like many people, I feel I look a bit healthier with some colour in my skin. Unfortunately, fake tan and I have a complicated relationship. Streaky legs, orange hands and the occasional patchy ankle are familiar territory.

The result?
Honestly — nothing noticeable.

And for the record: I would never go in the sun without SPF, regardless of what supplement I’m taking.
Are Tanning Tablets Worth Trying?
For me personally, the answer is probably no.
After a month of taking them consistently, I didn’t notice a meaningful difference in my skin tone. They certainly didn’t replace fake tan — which I will continue to rely on for that instant glow.
That said, some people online claim they see gradual results with longer use, so experiences may vary.
If you’re curious, it may be something to experiment with — but I wouldn’t expect dramatic results.
The Bottom Line
The appeal of tanning tablets is easy to understand. Who wouldn’t want an effortless bronze glow without hours in the sun or the risk of streaky fake tan?
But based on current research — and my own experience — Protein.com tanning tablets are unlikely to transform your skin tone on their own.
For now, the most reliable options remain the same:
- Self-tanning products
- Gradual tanning moisturisers
- Or a healthy dose of sunshine (with SPF, always)
Until science delivers a true “tan in a pill”, those bottled bronzers might still be doing the heavy lifting.
And like many people across the UK, I’ll be keeping one eye on the weather forecast and hoping for a rare burst of English sunshine.
