British People’s Favourite Things to Do, According to a New Survey

Researchers asked a panel of 2,000 participants to name their ultimate happy place, with some surprising results.

According to the poll, a person’s “happy place” can be ANYWHERE, from watching the sunrise on a beautiful beach (28 per cent), to taking your first sip of tea in the morning (21 per cent) or seeing your team score at a football match (17 per cent).

One in ten (11 per cent) said their happy place was in their local Indian restaurant, while 17 per cent insist, they’re never happier than when singing along to their favourite song, on full blast in their car.

More than one in ten (14 percent) say nothing beats browsing the aisles of a bookshop, while curling up on the sofa with a takeaway (29 per cent) and strolling through a meadow in Spring (16 per cent) all made the list of the nation’s ultimate “happy places”, according to the study by Chilean wine brand, 35 South.

In fact, more than half (53 percent) insist home is wherever you feel it.

From great outdoor adventures to guilty pleasures, the list paints a vivid picture of what makes the UK tick when it comes to contentment – and proves Brits can feel entirely fulfilled in both sweeping vistas and small indulgences.

In fact, 18 percent of the respondents polled said they feel that sense of home when in nature, while two thirds (65 percent) agree that, with winter coming, it is important for them to find places, and situations that make them happy and bring them joy.

Sarah Barrett, 33, from Cornwall, says: “That feeling of home can strike anywhere for me, but it’s often down at the nearby beach, Holywell Beach, in Cornwall. It’s postcard perfect most of the time, and it can make me feel entirely at home first thing in the morning walking the dog, when I barely see another person. Or when the sun is setting, I’ve made a picnic dinner for my friends and I’m having a sundowner to mark the end of a busy week.

It’s the same beach, and two different moments, but they both make me take a second to draw breath and appreciate where I am and who I’m with. In these moments, it’s home.”

A third (30 percent) admit they are spending more time in places that make them happy.

James Murch, spokesperson 35 South wine comments, “The survey shows Brits feel their “home away from home” in the most unique situations and mostly in moments where they feel completely themselves. On a beach at sunrise, or over their morning cuppa. Home and happiness really is wherever you feel it.

“We were were keen to find out where Brits feel most at home and, from the survey, this could literally be anywhere, from far flung destinations and epic adventures, to catching up around the kitchen table with friends.”

More than half (55 percent) of Brits like to capture the moments that evoke the feeling that they felt they are exactly where they’re supposed to be, taking as many as nine pics every month purely for prosperity.

While 39 percent say they love unearthing new happy places, one in twenty (five percent) admit they don’t like sharing the situations they feel the most joyful in with family and friends, preferring to enjoy them solo.
