Holidays in Spain Are Changing as Brits Look Beyond Tourist Hotspots
Spain remains one of the UK’s favourite holiday destinations, but growing concerns around overtourism, rising temperatures and overcrowding in popular resorts are encouraging some British travellers to rethink their usual summer getaway plans.
While millions of Brits still head to Spain every year, conversations around tourism have changed noticeably in recent years. Demonstrations in destinations including Barcelona, Mallorca and the Canary Islands have highlighted concerns from local residents about housing pressures, overcrowding and the long-term impact of mass tourism on local communities.
As a result, some travellers are becoming more selective about where and when they travel. Rather than avoiding Spain altogether, many holidaymakers are now looking beyond the busiest tourist hotspots and considering quieter regions, off-season breaks and slower-paced holidays.
At the same time, other European destinations are continuing to grow in popularity among British tourists looking for sunshine, culture and good food without the intensity of peak-season crowds. Italy, Greece, Portugal, Croatia and Cyprus remain among the destinations attracting travellers searching for a more relaxed Mediterranean escape.
Travel priorities have also shifted in recent years. While affordability remains important, many people are now placing greater value on:
- authentic travel experiences,
- sustainable tourism,
- flexibility,
- and destinations that feel less overcrowded during peak summer months.
Extreme heat has also become a growing factor for some holidaymakers when choosing where to travel, particularly during July and August. Many travellers are now opting to holiday earlier or later in the season to avoid both soaring temperatures and the busiest tourist periods.
Despite changing travel habits, Spain still holds huge appeal for UK tourists thanks to its beaches, climate, food and accessibility. For many people, the country remains a familiar and reliable choice for family holidays, city breaks and coastal escapes.
Rather than abandoning Spain completely, many travellers simply appear to be changing how they experience it — choosing lesser-known towns, smaller resorts and more local experiences away from heavily crowded tourist areas.
As travel habits continue to evolve, British holidaymakers seem increasingly focused on finding a balance between popular destinations and more thoughtful, experience-led travel.
