The beauty benefits of the ocean

The beauty benefits of the ocean

Tuesday 14th Jan 2025 |

As we enter the new year, a growing number of Brits are seeking holidays that rejuvenate both body and mind – and ocean breaks are emerging as a top choice. Combining natural skincare benefits with relaxation and wellness, new data from Scenic Cruises reveals why the ocean is being hailed as nature’s ultimate spa.

To shed light on the beauty benefits of fresh ocean air and water, Scenic Cruises partnered with skincare expert Nicola Jones. With over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, Nicola works closely with a cosmetic chemist to innovate skincare solutions for her brand, Face Junkie. Her background includes developing products at The Refinery in London and collaborating with renowned brands such as CLARINS, Medik8 and Dermalogica.

The beauty benefits of the ocean – from soothing irritation to a radiant complexion

If you’ve noticed your skin looks and feels better after a dip in the sea or an ocean cruise, you’re not alone. A recent survey of 449 ocean holiday-goers revealed:

  • 41% experienced more radiant skin
  • 35% noticed clearer skin and reduced breakouts
  • 32% felt their skin was softer
  • 25% noticed more hydrated skin
  • 20% experienced reduced redness or irritation
  • 13% found relief from conditions like eczema or psoriasis

Nicola Jones explains so many travellers return with glowing skin: “Just 10 minutes in mineral-rich sea water can leave your skin noticeably softer, smoother, and more radiant.”

She adds, “Sea air is also rich in minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and sodium, which can contribute to healthier skin. The high humidity in coastal areas helps to hydrate the skin, which is why many people notice a softer skin and a glow in their complexion while on holiday.”

The science behind the sea: Can it help rebuild your skin barrier?

Repairing the skin barrier is one of the hottest topics in skincare, with global searches for “skin barrier” skyrocketing by 117% since 2022 to over 512,000 searches last month. Nicola explains how time around the ocean can naturally support your skin barrier:

“Sea air and water are packed with minerals that deliver remarkable skin benefits. Magnesium deeply hydrates while reducing inflammation, making it ideal for soothing conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Calcium promotes cell renewal for a healthier, more resilient barrier, while potassium locks in moisture, leaving skin supple and hydrated. Zinc’s anti-inflammatory properties can help calm acne and reduce redness. The salt in sea water also acts as a gentle exfoliant, sloughing away dead skin cells for a fresher complexion.”

Nicola also notes the antibacterial properties of sea water, which can help with skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne:

“Sea air and sea water can provide relief for certain skin conditions. The salt in sea water has natural antiseptic properties, which can help cleanse the skin and reduce inflammation. For conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, the minerals in sea water can soothe irritation and promote healing. However, I recommend rinsing off sea water to prevent dryness caused by salt residue.

“Acne may also benefit from the antibacterial properties of sea water, but if there are open wounds or lesions, it is advisable to avoid direct contact or seek advice from a doctor.”

Beauty travel: The next big wellness trend?

The concept of traveling for beauty and skincare benefits is becoming increasingly popular, with 37% of Brits expressing interest in holidays specifically tailored to enhance their skin. Reflecting on this trend, Emma Beardsall, Brand & Marketing Manager at Scenic Cruises shares:

“In recent years, we’ve seen a surge in demand for wellness-focused holidays, with our onboard spa services becoming more popular than ever. As skincare and beauty trends dominate social media and popular culture, it’s no surprise that they’re influencing travel decisions, too. The ocean offers unparalleled natural skincare benefits, and our cruises provide the perfect way to combine luxury exploration with beauty and wellness.”

How to protect your skin on holiday

Although the benefits of being near the ocean are numerous, travellers should take the right precautions to avoid skin damage. Nicola provides her top tips for reaping the natural benefits of the ocean while protecting the skin:

“To enjoy the skincare benefits of the ocean while minimising potential damage, it is crucial to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Use a high SPF (30–50) and reapply it frequently, especially after swimming. Wearing protective sun hats and UV-blocking sunglasses can also help shield the skin and eyes from excessive sun exposure.”
