Why Dietitians Recommend Taking Probiotics With Antibiotics

Expert urges Brits to protect their digestive health when prescribed antibiotics

When you’re prescribed antibiotics, you’re often told what not to do – avoid alcohol, finish the full course – but one vital piece of advice is often overlooked: take probiotics.

That’s the warning from Brenda Madole, Registered Dietitian at MyOrThrive.com, who says far too many patients are left dealing with avoidable gut issues after taking antibiotics – including bloating, diarrhoea, and long-term digestive imbalances.

“Antibiotics don’t just target bad bacteria – they also wipe out the good bacteria in your gut that keep your digestion, immunity and even mood in balance,” explains Brenda.

“Taking a quality probiotic alongside your antibiotics can significantly reduce the risk of common side effects – and help your body bounce back quicker.”

Why probiotics matter when you’re on antibiotics

  • Antibiotics = Gut wipe-out: Most antibiotics are non-selective – they kill both harmful and helpful bacteria.

  • Probiotics = Rebuild support: Probiotics help replenish the ‘good’ bacteria and restore balance.

  • Timing matters: Ideally, probiotics should be taken at least 2 hours apart from your antibiotic dose to prevent neutralising each other.

Common symptoms linked to post-antibiotic gut imbalance:

  • Loose stools or diarrhoea

  • Bloating or cramping

  • Fatigue

  • Recurrent infections

  • Food intolerances or sensitivity flare-ups

“Think of probiotics like reinforcements for your gut. Without them, many people experience side effects that can drag on for weeks – and in some cases, lead to more serious gut issues down the line,” adds Brenda.

How to take probiotics during antibiotic treatment:

  • Choose a broad-spectrum probiotic with multiple strains

  • Take it at a different time of day than your antibiotic (2+ hour gap)

  • Continue taking it for at least 1–2 weeks after your antibiotic course ends
