French Food Ranked Second Favourite Cuisine by Brits
SACRÉ BLEU! BRITS SAY THE FRENCH COOK A BETTER STEAK – AND SEVEN IN TEN PREFER FRENCH FRIES TO CHIP SHOP CHIPS
A new study has revealed that French food has been ranked the second-best cuisine in the world by British foodies – with many admitting they prefer French classics to our own.
While British cuisine still took the top spot (90%), as many as 77% of Brits rated French food in second place – ahead of Spanish, Italian, Chinese, and even Indian.
When it comes to the dishes themselves, 65% admit they would pick steak frites over fish and chips, while 66% believe the French cook a steak better than we do. And in a shocking twist, seven in ten (70%) say French fries are better than traditional chip shop chips.
The research, carried out among 2,000 British foodies, also revealed the nation’s favourite French dishes of all time. Steak frites took the crown (44%), followed by chocolate fondant (37%), profiteroles (37%), and boeuf bourguignon (30%).
Other much-loved French favourites include:
- French onion soup (28%)
- Quiche Lorraine (25%)
- Steak tartare (23%)
- Cheese soufflé (23%)
- Coq au vin (18%)
- Fondue (18%)
- Ratatouille (17%)
- Croque monsieur (16%)
- Tarte Tatin (16%)
- Moules marinière (15%)
- Croque madame (9%)
More than two-thirds (67%) of British foodies said French food is more indulgent and sophisticated than other world cuisines. However, 15% admitted they are daunted by the amount of butter and cream in French dishes, while 70% find the idea of cooking them intimidating. Two-thirds (66%) even said French food is the hardest to make, with 14% saving it only for special occasions.
The research was commissioned by Mindful Chef, marking the launch of their new partnership with Côte Brasserie – a range of recipes designed to bring the joy of French food into homes with healthy, fuss-free twists on the classics.
Jesse Kempner, Head of Food at Mindful Chef, said:
“It’s clear from the research that as a nation we love French food, even if we are intimidated to cook it at home. That’s exactly why we’ve partnered with Côte – to deliver a healthy twist on the French classics and make them easy to enjoy any day of the week.”
Steve Allen, Executive Chef at Côte, added:
“The data reveals a common misconception – that French cooking at home is overly complex. It doesn’t need to be.”
