In the ever-evolving world of beauty, where trends come and go, one skincare ingredient stands out for its remarkable hydrating and moisture boosting properties – Hyaluronic Acid. Recognised for its ability to retain moisture and promote a plump and radiant complexion, hyaluronic acid has become a firm favourite in skincare and haircare regimes world-wide.
So why is hyaluronic acid so great? Hyaluronic acid is the hydrating hero of skincare and haircare, known for its intensely moisturising properties. A sugar molecule found naturally in the skin, hyaluronic acid helps the skin retain and lock in moisture – it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

Is hyaluronic acid really necessary? Do all skin types need it?
According to skin expert and clinical facialist Kate Kerr Hyaluronic Acid is crucial for hydration and optimum health of all skin types, however getting your skin to work for itself and produce its own natural hyaluronic acid is far better than relying on synthetic versions. Hyaluronic Acid is a part of the Glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s ) family within the skin. GAG’s are water binding molecules, helping to hydrate the skin. GAG’s are important for not just hydration but they are also vital for the production of collagen as well as providing the cushioning and support around your collagen and elastin. If you are producing enough GAG’S then this helps your collagen production to be more efficient and therefore keeping the skin plump and firm. If your skin is not able to naturally produce enough hydration naturally, then you can supplement this topically with a Hyaluronic Acid serum, rather than a moisturiser as moisturisers can inhibit the production of GAGs, upsets the keratinocyte maturation cycle and impairs the barrier.
Hyaluronic Acid serums can help to restore hydration within the skin as well as soothing and preventing moisture loss out of the skin. It is a little-known fact that Hyaluronic Acid also has antioxidant abilities, so helps prevent environmental damage within the skin.
