Proposing to your partner might seem like an easy task, but sometimes you’re not exactly sure where to get down on one knee.
With 3,000 Google searches for ‘proposal ideas’ in the last month, Bridebook, the UK’s No. 1 wedding planning app, has revealed the top UK cities for an autumn proposal.
To determine the most romantic and atmospheric spots, researchers analysed the UK’s most populated cities across seasonal factors such as the percentage of green space (for those golden, leafy backdrops), average October rainfall (the lower, the better for a dry outdoor moment), the number of pumpkin patches (that ever-growing autumn trend and for Halloween festivities), and the number of iconic viewpoints and monuments (always a favourite choice for such a meaningful and unforgettable moment).
Below is the table ranking the top 10 UK cities for the most autumnal proposal spots, with each city scored out of 100.
Unsurprisingly, first place goes to our enormous and varied capital. Whether it’s a proposal in Hyde Park or a riverside moment near Tower Bridge, London boasts 325 landmarks, alongside its vast green spaces and seven pumpkin patches, providing many beautiful autumnal proposal spots.
In second place is Leeds, boasting an impressive 42 landmarks. This northern city offers expansive outdoor landscapes such as Roundhay Park and Temple Newsam to enhance the romance of the occasion, alongside nine pumpkin patches and 15.4% tree coverage for a golden, leafy backdrop.
If you’re looking to propose in a playful seasonal backdrop, Birmingham ranks in third place, with the highest number of pumpkin patches (13) in the top 5. Newcastle also ranks high for its number of pumpkin patches (12) in fourth place, while Southampton has the highest percentage of trees (19.5%) in the whole study – making it an ideal spot for an outdoor proposal and seasonal photo opportunity.
Middlesbrough, perhaps surprisingly, lands in seventh place, proving that smaller cities can still prosper for a range of autumn backdrops. With only 50mm of rain in October, it’s perfect for couples hoping to avoid a rain-soaked engagement.
The ever-charming Scottish cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow round off the top 10. Edinburgh ranks in ninth place in part due to its high count of landmarks at 117 in total, yet its high rainfall percentage keeps this Scottish city in ninth place. With 1.7 million inhabitants, Glasgow also boasts an impressive 20 pumpkin patches, the highest number in the UK, but also falls short due to its excessive rainfall (135mm). Outside our city ranking, there are plenty of other beautiful spots to propose with a crisp autumn setting, whether that’s the Lake District or the Cotswolds.
Hamish Shepard, Founder of Bridebook, comments: “Autumn is an incredibly romantic time of year, with the crisp air and warm hues making an incredible setting for a heartfelt proposal. From the crunch of leaves underfoot to the glow of candlelight, it’s all about those little details that make your proposal feel uniquely yours. Whether you’re looking to add some sparkle to your proposal, like autumn wreaths and sitting on a plaid blanket, or just want to relax and enjoy the outdoor scenery, there’s no wrong way to bring autumn magic into your big moment. A lovely touch is to gift her an autumnal bouquet. Dried flowers last, so she’ll have your bouquet as a keepsake long after to cement the memory. For those wanting to capture the full autumnal vibe for any proposal pictures, there are plenty of exciting locations across the cities in this study, whether that’s a ruined castle, a pumpkin patch, or even a woodland clearing.”
