Essential Tips for a Bold Home Exterior

Whether you’ve just moved into a property and want to make it more your own, or you’re bored with your current home and want to inject some personality, making your exterior home design bolder can provide the change you need to feel good about your house. This article suggests ways to brighten your property and make it unique, bold and beautiful

Bold entrance

The entrance is where all your guests, you and your family first approach the house, making it especially important for creating a first impression and improving your kerb appeal

Front doors are a great way to make a bold statement on your home’s exterior, whether you do so through style, colour, shape, accessories or front door windows. Composite front doors (made from a blend of durable materials) are often customisable and personalisable, so you can pick and choose each element to design something that feels right for your home and reflects your personality.

Here are some ideas for bold front door designs:

  • A bright colour on a sleek and minimalist-looking door. For example, you could go for a striking red colour on a modern door that places all focus on the bold colour.
  • A bright colour on an eclectic or rustic door. If you’re going for a bohemian look, wood (or faux wood) panelling, perhaps paired with flowery or nature-inspired accessories, would work. In this case, a more on-theme colour, like a pastel or a deep green, might be best.
  • A striking black or white door with accessories or windows to add personality. If you’re not a fan of the idea of a brightly coloured front door, this is a great option. You can add sleek, minimalist door features, like a long vertical handle, or more artsy, extravagant options for a more Art Deco feel.

Play with colours

Your entire home exterior, including your front door, can be injected with a little bit of colour to add a personal touch and make your property stand out. Your walls, garage doors or window frames are also great places to experiment with different colour schemes.

Generally, if you want bold, bright colours for your doors, it makes sense to match all external doors (i.e., the garage and front door) to make the entire look feel and appear more cohesive. Equally, make sure your colours complement each other if you are using multiple bold colours. For example, if you would like two different shades of blue, ensure they look good together by testing them side by side with swatches.

Experiment with textures

Another way to make your home more personal to you and to have more of a unique look is to have different (complementary) textures. This could include the exterior of your property’s walls, with features like panelling or new brickwork, or it could consist of different textures in your windows, such as stained glass or different grid shapes.

If you choose to do a few of these options, again, be aware of what works well together – or at least what you feel works well together to reflect you.

Use alternative lighting

Depending on how big your driveway is or how much lighting you can feasibly use (without disturbing your neighbour), you can add exterior home lighting to brighten up your property and make it more visible and bold. Consider where you would like the lighting (e.g., to light your property name or number) and the colour of lighting you prefer (e.g., warm or cold).

Make your home exterior bold

If any of these ideas take your fancy and you want a meaningful, noticeable change to your everyday life, then get decorating and hunt down the features that stand out to you!
