Langdale Chase Hotel Offers Unique Yacht Experience

Wednesday 09th Apr 2025 |

Langdale Chase, the Lake District’s iconic, boutique luxury hotel, is delighted to bring a beautiful, museum grade 1920’s motor yacht, Albatros to its newly restored boathouse. Offering an authentic way to experience Windermere’s unrivalled setting, Albatros is one of a kind in the Lakes.

The hotel will be hosting three Windermere sailings a day – at 10am, 12 noon and 3:30pm – open to guests and locals, as well as the option of a pre-dinner evening sunset sailing in the summer with champagne, drinks and canapés. This sophisticated cruising experience is also available for private charter for up to 12 guests – ideal for special occasions including birthdays and wedding proposals.

Those looking to extend their lakeside adventure can also enjoy Langdale Chase’s new Swallows and Amazons inspired afternoon tea, served on its terrace beside the glistening waters that inspired Arthur Ransome’s famous tale.

Albatros was built in Berlin in 1928 and originally used as a yacht for pleasure trips, mainly on the Elbe River and its connecting waters. The elegant motorboat was later repurposed as a cargo vessel during World War II, before becoming a ferry and finally moving to Amsterdam. In 2008 her previous owners undertook a complete yet sensitive restoration, and has been kept in museum condition before moving to Langdale Chase.

Rick Bailey, executive chairman at Thwaites, said: “We are so lucky to be able to bring such a special and unique classic motor yacht to Langdale Chase and Windemere – she is truly amazing and takes us back to the golden age of Lakeland glamour.

“Albatros is the perfect answer to stepping off the jetties at Langdale Chase and enjoying Windermere from the water. She has a has a colourful history, is approaching her 100th birthday and still has many adventures to come – our guests are going to love the opportunity to enjoy her.”

Standing on the shores of Lake Windermere, Langdale Chase reopened its doors in November 2023 following a careful and sensitive 12-month restoration. Interiors were inspired by the 1920s and 1930s, a time known as the ‘golden era’ of the Lake District. With exceptional style and thoughtful service, the team at Langdale Chase are bringing this golden era to the modern day.

Langdale Chase features a two AA Rosette restaurant and a stylish art deco bar both with sweeping views over the water and the majestic Coniston Fells. The 30 expansive, individually designed rooms and suites have elegant touches such as slipper baths, copper hot tubs and cosy reading nooks overlooking the lake.

Albatros is the latest addition to a carefully curated list of immersive outdoor experiences at the hotel which include guided wild swimming, paddle boarding, guided hiking, e-cycling safaris and much more. After a day adventuring, guests can unwind in the hotel’s cinema room with popcorn, sweets, and an ice cream, enjoy wine tasting with the sommelier or just kick back in the bar or on the terrace.

Room rates at Langdale Chase start from £390 per night, on a B&B basis.

Scheduled sailings on Albatros range from £40pp-£70pp. Private charter upon request.
