The 5 Natural Skin Oils Trending Right Now — And What They Might Actually Do for Your Skin

Like every other woman in Britain — and probably the world — I’m always on the lookout for that miracle cure. At 46, staring down the barrel of the menopause, as I often say in many of the skincare articles I write, and if there’s a new product promising to blur fine lines and wrinkles, I’m in there like swimwear.

natural skin oils

Lately, that curiosity has led me down the skin oil rabbit hole. I do struggle with dry skin and the appearance of fine lines, and while oils definitely aren’t for everyone — some people hate that oil-slick feeling — I’m actually a fan. Especially overnight, when you can let your skin do its thing without worrying about shine. (Not great for pillowcases, so it’s worth using an old one for an overnight oil).

After doing a bit of research, it’s worth pointing out that many of the oils currently trending aren’t marketed specifically as facial oils and are more commonly used on the body. That said, I’ve always enjoyed using an oil on my face, particularly when my skin feels dry or tight. As with most skincare, it comes down to personal preference, skin type and how you use them. For me, a well-chosen oil, used sensibly, can work beautifully as part of an evening routine.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a closer look at five natural oils currently trending, what they are, and what they might do for the skin.

Arnica Oil

Arnica oil isn’t traditionally thought of as a beauty oil. It’s better known for its use in massage and body care, particularly for soothing skin after physical activity or helping tired muscles feel more comfortable.

Because arnica is quite a powerful botanical, it’s most commonly used on the body rather than the face. That said, some people do like to use a small amount on areas such as the neck, shoulders or décolletage, particularly if skin feels tender or stressed. It’s not one to slather on, but when used sparingly, it can feel wonderfully comforting.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of those ingredients that has been quietly doing the rounds long before luxury skincare brands existed. Rich and deeply nourishing, it has a long history of being used to soften dry skin.

It’s particularly good on the body — think elbows, legs, hands and anywhere that feels rough or tight. On the face, olive oil is very much a personal choice. Some people find it too heavy, while others love the comfort it provides when skin is especially dry. Used at night and applied lightly, it can help skin feel replenished by morning.

Organic Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been trending for years, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. As a body oil, it’s rich, moisturising and leaves skin feeling soft and smooth, which explains why so many people swear by it.

For facial use, coconut oil can be hit or miss. It’s heavier than most oils, so it tends to suit very dry skin or overnight use rather than everyday wear. Some people love the glow it gives; others prefer to keep it firmly for body care. Either way, it remains one of the most versatile oils you can own.

Apricot Oil

Apricot oil is one of the most underrated oils in my opinion. It’s lighter than many of the others on this list, absorbs well and doesn’t leave skin feeling greasy, which makes it particularly appealing if you’re cautious about oils.

It works well on both face and body and is often favoured by people with dry or sensitive skin. Because it’s gentle and well-tolerated, it’s also commonly used as a base oil — but it’s more than capable of standing on its own. If you’re oil-curious but nervous, this is a great place to start.

Carrot Oil

Carrot oil is probably the least familiar oil here, but it’s currently enjoying a surge in interest. It’s often associated with skin that looks tired or dull and is usually used in smaller amounts because it’s quite concentrated.

Rather than using it alone, many people prefer to blend carrot oil with a lighter oil such as apricot. Used at night, it can feel like a luxurious addition to a routine without being overpowering. It’s one of those oils that feels quietly effective rather than flashy.

Product to try:
Fushi Wild Carrot Oil

This oil is designed for skin and body use and is often favoured by those who enjoy natural, minimalist skincare routines.

Final Thoughts

Skin oils are never a one-size-fits-all solution, and they certainly won’t suit everyone. But if, like me, you enjoy the comfort of an oil — particularly as skin changes with age — there’s something reassuring about these simple, natural options.

Whether you prefer something rich and cocooning or light and easily absorbed, the key is using oils in a way that suits your skin rather than following trends blindly. Sometimes it’s not about finding a miracle cure, but about finding what makes your skin feel its best.
