The Best European Autumn Destinations

Saturday 24th Sep 2022 |

Autumn is by far the most underrated of all the travel seasons.

Winter brings the ski season, summer brings the heat, but the beautiful colours – and not to mention lack of crowds – in the fall months create an experience you won’t forget.

Malta

The beautiful island of Malta has much to offer. Despite typically being classed as a Mediterranean summer destination, its southern location offers the perfect 20 degrees Celsius weather for some fall tourism. For example, visitors can get a chance to see several of the UNESCO World Heritage monolithic temples, such as Tarxien and Ggantija, from the 3rd and 4th centuries. Fans of hit series Game of Thrones can visit the filming location of the wedding of Daenerys and Khal Drogo on the island of Gozo. Or why not try your luck at Videoslots, as gambling is one of Malta’s world-renowned specialities?

Germany

A European fall list would be incomplete without mentioning Germany and its Oktoberfest. Late September to October is the time to go to Münich to have a drink, although this is not the only fun fall festivity arranged in the country. There are also wine festivals in cities such as Stuttgart and Neustadt, and a pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg. Despite it being the season of Oktoberfest, autumn is generally considered low- or off-season for tourists, meaning your stay can be cheaper and less crowded. Furthermore, it also means that culture events, such as concerts and operas, are in season for those with a musical ear.

Slovenia

For those who prefer wine over beer, Slovenia is the ultimate autumn destination. The country is known for its wine production, and the harvest falls under the fall months. Amongst other things, you can try the orange wine which the Primorska region is known for. It is also the oldest form of wine, so it’s definitely worth a try for wine enthusiasts. Apart from their beverages, Slovenia offers wonderful fall foliage in the Triglav National Park, and few sights beat that of the lonely church in the middle of Lake Bohinj.

Transylvania

For those who enjoy the season of Halloween, there is no better destination than the nature of the Romanian region of Transylvania. Rumoured to be the home of Bram Stoker’s Dracula the vampire, the region offers plenty of beautifully spooky nature and medieval castles where you can spot a few bats if you’re lucky. Popular tourist destinations include the mighty castles of Bran and Corvin and the Sighisoara Citadel, but there are also several beautiful national parks and picturesque little towns where you can explore the Transylvanian culture.

Scotland

The last place on our list is the rolling hills of Scotland. The region is an amazing opportunity for linguists, historians, outdoor people and movie lovers alike. The Jacobite Steam Train, made famous for its role as the Hogwarts Express, leads you into the heartlands of Scotland where you can explore famous places such as the Loch Ness Lake. Later on, if you’re lucky, the open fields of nature can provide you with stunning stargazing views or even northern lights. Native Scottish oysters are only one of the many seasonal delicacies you can try during your stay.
