 The carnivore diet, which involves consuming only animal products and excluding all plant-based foods, has gained popularity on social media platforms like TikTok.

However, this extreme diet is not suitable for everyone and can pose significant health risks. Rob Barton from Factory Weights warn people who should avoid the carnivore diet: 

Individuals with Heart Disease or High Cholesterol 

The carnivore diet is high in saturated fats and cholesterol, which can exacerbate heart disease and lead to elevated cholesterol levels. People with pre-existing heart conditions or high cholesterol should avoid this diet to prevent further cardiovascular complications. 

People with Kidney Issues 

High protein intake can put extra strain on the kidneys, making it difficult for them to filter waste products from the blood. Those with kidney disease or impaired kidney function should avoid the carnivore diet to prevent worsening their condition. 

Diabetics and Those with Insulin Resistance 

While some proponents claim that the carnivore diet can stabilise blood sugar levels, it can be risky for people with diabetes or insulin resistance. The lack of fibres and essential nutrients from plant-based foods can lead to poor blood sugar control and nutrient imbalances. 

Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women 

Pregnant and breastfeeding women have increased nutritional needs that are best met through a varied and balanced diet. The carnivore diet lacks essential vitamins, minerals, and fibre necessary for the health of both the mother and the developing baby. 

Individuals with Digestive Disorders 

People with digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or other gastrointestinal conditions may find the carnivore diet exacerbates their symptoms. The absence of dietary fibre from plant-based foods can lead to constipation and other digestive problems. 

Athletes and Highly Active Individuals 

Athletes and those with high physical activity levels require a diverse range of nutrients to support performance and recovery. The carnivore diet may not provide sufficient carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to meet these demands, potentially impairing athletic performance and recovery. 

People with Mental Health Conditions 

A balanced diet rich in various nutrients is essential for mental health. The carnivore diet lacks important nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B and D, and antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, which are crucial for brain health. Individuals with mental health conditions should avoid restrictive diets that could negatively impact their mental well-being. 

Children and Adolescents 

Growing children and adolescents need a wide range of nutrients to support their development. The carnivore diet is too restrictive and can lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients necessary for healthy growth and development. 

Elderly Individuals Older adults often require more nutrients, including fibre, vitamins, and minerals, to maintain their health. The carnivore diet’s lack of plant-based foods can lead to nutritional deficiencies, making it unsuitable for elderly individuals. 

Anyone with a History of Eating Disorders 

Individuals with a history of eating disorders should avoid highly restrictive diets like the carnivore diet. Such diets can trigger unhealthy eating behaviours and exacerbate disordered eating patterns.
