So what exactly is this mistake that’s causing wedding planners to wince? Postigo reveals that guests are overlooking the most important factor when choosing their outfit: what the bride and groom are planning to wear – and inadvertently outshining them on their special day.
The Rise of Guest Outfit Overdressing
This mistake – guests choosing outfits that compete with or overshadow the couple – has become particularly pronounced in 2025. Postigo points to several factors driving this trend, from Pinterest-inspired maximalist dressing to guests selecting stark white ensembles or ultra-loud, attention-grabbing outfits.
“We’re seeing guests arrive in full white looks, dramatic ball gowns for afternoon ceremonies, or outfits so elaborate they could easily be mistaken for the bride’s second dress,” says Postigo. “The intention isn’t malicious, but the impact on the couple can be devastating.”
The wedding planner explains that this shift represents a fundamental misunderstanding of wedding guest etiquette. While previous generations focused on blending respectfully into the celebration, today’s guests often view weddings as opportunities for their own fashion moments.
How to Dress Stylishly Without Stealing the Show
Fortunately, looking fabulous while respecting the couple isn’t impossible. Postigo shares her top tips for navigating wedding guest attire in 2025:
1. Research the Wedding Style and Venue
Before shopping, consider the ceremony location and time of day. A beach wedding calls for different attire than a cathedral ceremony. “I always tell guests to think about the wedding’s overall vibe,” Postigo advises. “A rustic barn celebration has a completely different dress code than a black-tie city affair.”
2. Avoid the Obvious No-Nos
White remains off-limits, but Postigo warns against other problematic choices. “Anything too revealing, overly casual, or excessively flashy can detract from the couple’s moment. Think elegant restraint rather than maximum impact.”
3. Choose Colours That Complement, Not Compete
Rich jewel tones, soft pastels, or classic navy work beautifully without overwhelming the wedding palette. “I love when guests choose colours that photograph well alongside the couple without creating visual competition,” notes Postigo.
4. Consider the Photography Factor
With every moment documented, think about how your outfit will appear in photos with the bride and groom. “Your goal should be to enhance the overall aesthetic of their wedding album, not dominate it,” explains Postigo.
5. When in Doubt, Ask
The simplest solution? Reach out to the couple or their planner for guidance. “Most couples appreciate guests who care enough to check, especially for destination weddings or themed celebrations.”
