We often talk about exfoliating our faces, but it is important to exfoliate our bodies too, Dr Qian Xu, Founder and Medical Director of Skin Aesthetics explains why.
The skin is the largest organ in the body, and the face only accounts for 9% of your total body surface area. Most people try to look after the skin on their faces, but a lot of people neglect their bodies. Exfoliation is an important part of your skincare routine because it helps to remove old skin cells, which then stimulates growth of new skin cells. Regular exfoliation not only will leave your skin feeling soft and looking radiant, but it will help the skin stay healthy as well.
With regular exfoliation, the skin will become less dull and more radiant. It can also become more plump and less dry as the skin renewal speeds up. This is a great way to improve the skin on your legs going into the summer, so that you will look great in those summer dresses.
This is essentially giving your body a good scrub with a brush. The brush shouldn’t be rough enough to scratch the skin, but it should be rough enough to remove the dead skin cells.
Cellulite is a problem that happens under the skin in the fatty layer, so exfoliation of the skin won’t have any effects on cellulite.
How to do it
It’s quite nice to exfoliate in the bath. Having a good soak first can help loosen some of the dead skin cells, making the exfoliation easier. It doesn’t really matter what order you do the exfoliation, just be systematic and don’t be too aggressive.
How often should we exfoliate our bodies?
This depends on how aggressive you are with your exfoliation. If you tend to do a gentle scrub in the shower, you can do it a couple of times a week. However, if you have a proper scrub in the bath, doing this a couple of times a month would be more than enough.
