Lily Keeling, Green Chef’s Registered Nutritionist shares three unexpected benefits of watermelon and how you can incorporate this into your meals:
It’s like an electrolyte drink (which tastes so much better)
Watermelon has many great health benefits and it’s no secret it’s high in water content. What this also means it that it is full of electrolytes such as potassium which help us replace what we need after sport, partying or simply existing in this heatwave! Maintaining hydration is key for your health to eliminate symptoms of fatigue, headaches and muscle cramps. We roughly consume 20% of our water intake from food so make sure to pack your diet with this fruit. Adding into smoothies is a great way to reap all the benefits of this hydrating ingredient.
Packed full of vitamin C
Watermelon is also supercharged with vitamin C which strongly supports immune systems – a much-welcomed addition to any meal with all these summer colds flying about. Vitamin C aids in production of collagen which is the structure that keeps your skin is plump and firm so top up mouthfuls of this delicious snack to glow inside and out. Cool down in the scorching heat with a refreshing watermelon natural ice lolly made with greek yoghurt, chopped watermelon, honey and kiwi fruit. These are easy to make and contain more antioxidants because of the kiwis! It’s the perfect health boost.
Improves digestion
Watermelon’s high-water content is extremely beneficial for digestive health. Water is vital for digestion to ensure food is constantly moving through the intestines and ensure your body is absorbing all the nutrients. The fruit also contains prebiotic fibre which aids in feeding our microbiome and can in turn improve our gut health. During the summer months, I love creating a Vietnamese-style watermelon salad with rice noodles, mint, thai basil, coriander and watermelon, creating a perfect side salad at a barbecue or picnic.
