The Chester Weekender at The Moxy Hotel

Thursday 12th Jan 2023 |

When you think of a city break in the north, the likes of Liverpool, Edinburgh, and York tend to spring to mind, with plenty of historical landmarks and famous attractions, and whilst I love these cities, there is one city I think misses out on the prestige they enjoy.

In my opinion, Chester is the unsung hero of the north. Beautifully preserved, the city’s Roman-built walls originate from 100AD and form almost a two-mile circuit around the city and still boast medieval-style gates.

Walking along the walls offers fantastic views of the city including the Eastgate Clock, Pemberton’s Parlour, Grosvenor Bridge and of the course ‘The Wishing Steps’, legend has it that if you run up and down them twice without drawing breath, your wish will come true!

The city also boasts one of the oldest racecourses in the world, a world-famous zoo and a stunning cathedral dating back over 1000 years – visit the cathedral tower to enjoy superb panoramic views of the city.

One of my favourite parts of Chester, is The Chester Rows, a collection of galleried walkways which evolved from houses and shops dating as far back as the 14th century. With plenty of beautiful boutiques and curiosities to enjoy, The Rows can keep me entertained for hours!

Of course, the River Dee is a rather lovely feature of the city, and whilst visiting Chester, one simply must enjoy a boat ride to take in Queen’s Park Bridge and Grosvenor Park. A fabulous Sunday morning jaunt to precede a relaxing brunch in one of Chester’s many fine eateries.

For the young and the young at heart, Chester boasts a huge selection of traditional pubs, eclectic bars, quirky eateries and stylish restaurants – there is something to suit everyone, from leisurely lunches, to fine dining, a day at the races or a historical tour, everyone can find something to enjoy in this beautiful city.

So. Have I sold it to you? I thought so. Now you need somewhere to stay and fortunately for you, I have the perfect place tucked up my sleeve.

I am a huge champion of The Moxy group of hotels, they enjoy the VERY best city locations and offer immaculate accommodation at really affordable prices – and their Chester offering is no exception. Conveniently positioned a short stroll along the canal into the heart of the city, this is one of my favourites. It is of course just as simple to call a cab, it’s literally a five-minute journey to the action, however,  I enjoyed the canal option as it boasts a couple of really nice bars along the way….I hear through the grapevine the management is considering a water taxi for guests too – how fabulous, I love that idea!

The Moxy is always well turned out with quirky curiosities adorning the public spaces and a rather deliciously potent welcome cocktail on arrival. The staff are ALWAYS on point with the perfect combination of relaxed professionalism and nothing is ever too much trouble.

As I’ve said before, the guest experience at The Moxy is unique, carefully curated to offer a fantastic break with all the bells and whistles you expect from high-end luxury hotels, without the extortionate price tag,  including beautiful lounges with an eclectic mix of artwork adorning the walls.

I must mention – The Moxy has a cracking bar offering and I enjoyed a (a few too many) cocktails, before hitting the sack. They definitely know how to shake up a party…..

If you are looking for an affordable, well-located, and stylish place to stay for a break with the girls, a business trip, a family getaway, or a couples weekend – they have it covered and it won’t cost the earth.

Now you’re in the know, pack up your pull along, and off you pop, the beautiful city of Chester awaits and so do your fabulous hosts at The Moxy Chester. Tell them I sent you.
