Move Over Churros – Gooey Fried Cookie Fries Could Be The Next Big Dessert Trend

Fries have officially gone far beyond the humble potato.

We’ve fallen in love with halloumi fries, sweet potato fries, loaded dirty fries, pickle fries and even avocado fries. The beauty of them all? They’re made for dipping. Whether it’s garlic mayo, ranch, hot honey or smoky barbecue sauce, there’s something undeniably satisfying about dunking every bite before taking a mouthful.

So why should savoury snacks have all the fun?

Enter fried cookie fries – crisp on the outside, warm and gloriously gooey in the middle, served with an array of sweet dipping sauces that turn dessert into an interactive experience.

Think of them as the love child of a warm chocolate chip cookie, a fried doughnut and a classic fried Mars Bar. They’re indulgent, ridiculously moreish and almost impossible to eat without getting chocolate or caramel on your fingers.

Whether you’re looking for a fun weekend baking project, a crowd-pleasing dessert or something a little different for your next movie night, these crispy cookie fries deserve a place on your menu.

Why Fry Cookie Dough?

Baking cookie dough creates crisp edges and a soft centre, but frying takes things to another level.

By freezing the cookie dough first and coating it in a light batter, the outside becomes beautifully golden and crisp while the inside gently warms, leaving you with a soft, melty cookie centre packed with pockets of molten chocolate.

It’s the same principle behind favourites like fried Oreos and fried Mars Bars – comforting, nostalgic and wonderfully indulgent.

Gooey Fried Cookie Fries Recipe

Ingredients

For the cookie dough

  • 125g unsalted butter, softened
  • 100g light brown sugar
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 220g plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 100g milk or dark chocolate chunks

For the batter

  • 150g self-raising flour
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 200ml ice-cold sparkling water

To fry

  • Vegetable oil

To serve

  • Icing sugar
  • Warm chocolate sauce
  • Salted caramel sauce
  • Biscoff spread
  • Raspberry coulis
  • White chocolate sauce
  • Peanut butter sauce

Method

Cream together the butter, light brown sugar and caster sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg yolk and vanilla extract before stirring through the flour, baking powder and salt until a soft dough forms.

Fold through the chocolate chunks, then divide the dough into chunky finger-sized pieces, shaping each one to resemble a thick-cut chip.

Arrange the cookie fries on a tray lined with baking paper and freeze for at least one hour. This step is essential as it helps the dough hold its shape while frying.

When you’re ready to cook, heat vegetable oil to around 170°C.

Meanwhile, prepare the batter by whisking together the self-raising flour, sugar and baking powder before gradually adding the ice-cold sparkling water until you have a smooth batter similar to double cream.

Working in small batches, dip each frozen cookie fry into the batter, allowing any excess to drip away before carefully lowering it into the hot oil.

Cook for around two to three minutes, turning occasionally, until evenly golden brown and crisp.

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

Finish with a generous dusting of icing sugar and serve immediately while the centres are still warm and gooey.

The Best Dipping Sauces

The beauty of cookie fries is that everyone can mix and match their own favourite flavours.

Some of our top choices include:

  • Warm Nutella
  • Salted caramel sauce
  • Melted white chocolate
  • Biscoff spread
  • Raspberry coulis
  • Strawberry sauce
  • Peanut butter sauce
  • Marshmallow fluff
  • Pistachio cream
  • Chocolate orange sauce

Serve them in small ramekins and let everyone build their perfect combination.

Easy Ways To Take Cookie Fries To The Next Level

Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, it’s easy to put your own spin on the trend.

Swap the chocolate chunks for white chocolate, caramel pieces or peanut butter chips. Add orange zest to the dough for a chocolate orange version, stir through crushed honeycomb for extra crunch or finish the cooked fries with crushed pistachios, freeze-dried raspberries or colourful sprinkles.

For the ultimate dessert platter, pile the cookie fries into a paper cone or serving basket and surround them with a selection of warm dipping sauces so everyone can help themselves.

If savoury fries have proved one thing, it’s that people love food they can dip. Cookie fries simply bring that same playful experience to dessert – and once you’ve tried them warm from the fryer with salted caramel or melted chocolate, ordinary cookies may never feel quite the same again.
