Polo Club Hotel Review: A Glamorous Getaway in Southam
I love a little mid-week trip, there’s something that just feels a little bit naughty about gallavanting off on a school night to enjoy oneself! However, this was all in the name of work – of course! So on a sunny afternoon in May I packed up my car with my trusty overnight bag and set off for Southam near Leamington Spa for a girly overnight stay with my pal that I was to meet on arrival.
After a pleasant three hour journey, the latter hour spent driving through the greenery of the beautiful Warwickshire countryside I arrived at the Polo Club Hotel in its sprawling 600 acre estate and oh my I was in for a treat. The hotel had only officially opened its doors to guests around a month prior and as I rolled my car into the parking space adjacent to the hotels Rolls Royce, I wondered if I was a little underdressed in my ‘jeans and a nice top’ regalia.

The exterior of the Polo Club Hotel is particularly striking — an elegant fusion of classical grandeur and modern polish. With its sweeping driveway and imposing white pillars, the façade feels distinctly Grecian villa meets country estate chic. The symmetrical architecture is adorned with ornate details, including a golden crest atop the pediment, adding a regal touch. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels and balconies lend a contemporary edge, while manicured topiary and crisp lines throughout the building’s design whisper luxury at every turn. It’s the kind of entrance that makes you straighten your posture a little as you walk in — all understated opulence and quiet confidence.
A friendly concierge team was ready to welcome me in the shiny new reception lobby, all immaculately turned out in smart, equestrian-style gilets and chinos. Okay — I wasn’t a million miles off the mark with my outfit, but still, note to self: you can never be too overdressed. Must try harder next time!
I was so excited for my friend to arrive. Being a bit of an equestrian type herself — and, let’s just say, partial to the finer things — I was confident I’d nailed the hotel choice. Check-in was seamless, and I was soon shown to my room: a stunning space dressed in the hotel’s signature blue and gold, complete with a sweeping balcony. From there, I leaned out over the front of the hotel, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding polo pitches. With more pitches than anywhere else in the UK — and let me tell you, they are immaculate — it was clear I’d stepped into a slice of sporting luxury.

My friend arrived right on cue — just as I’d poured myself a little glass of fizz to celebrate the (non) occasion. She, too, was instantly taken with the grandeur of our home for the next 24 hours. From the elegant architecture to the effortlessly luxurious vibe, it was clear we were in for a rather fabulous stay.
After a little relaxation and the usual catch-up in our suite, we headed downstairs, passing through the stunning lobby to accost the manager and glean a bit more insight into the hotel. As luck would have it, he had a swanky golf buggy at his disposal — and it only seemed right that he give us a little tour of the hotel and its grounds. So, off we went!
Manicured to perfection and framed by open fields, the pitches create a stunning backdrop — whether you’re an avid polo fan or simply enjoy the spectacle of horses thundering across the turf. The grounds invite leisurely strolls, spontaneous photoshoots, and that glorious feeling of being completely removed from the everyday.
The hotel and grounds, of course, lend themselves perfectly to polo — it was purpose-built for it, after all. As we zipped around in the buggy, I made a mental note to return for a match. There’s something undeniably thrilling about a group of riders thundering across the field on powerful horses, swinging wooden mallets at full speed. It’s fast, it’s fierce, and — dare I say it — a touch perilous. Fabulous!
At the bottom end of the estate is a rather glorious addition. A good old fashioned pub – or is it?
The Millstone Hare was built in 2016, developed from a hand-drawn sketch by the estate’s founder, Dr. Dallas Burston. His vision brought to life an Olde English-style pub that feels like it’s always belonged. With its rustic charm and traditional design, The Millstone Hare perfectly complements the grandeur of the surrounding 600-acre estate — a warm, welcoming contrast to the sleek sophistication of the hotel itself.

We were dropped off at the pub by one of the team, riding in our trusty golf buggy — naturally. The Millstone Hare serves up good old-fashioned pub food with a few clever modern twists, and honestly, it was just what the doctor ordered.
Should you prefer to keep your experience entirely within the hotel, there’s a more refined, avant-garde dining option available on-site. While details may vary, the hotel’s contemporary restaurant offers a carefully curated menu that leans into modern British cuisine with a creative flair — think elegant plating, seasonal ingredients, and a wine list to match. It’s ideal for those looking to elevate their evening with a touch more glamour. Do check with reception for opening times and availability, as this stylish spot may operate limited hours depending on the day.

Step inside the hotel’s bar and restaurant and you’re met with a striking mix of modern opulence and bold theatricality. Towering statues — think Grecian goddesses and rearing horses — punctuate the space, adding a dramatic flair that feels part high art, part fantasy. High ceilings, statement lighting, and a palette of deep blues and golds continue the Polo Club Hotel’s signature aesthetic, creating an atmosphere that’s both grand and inviting. It’s the kind of place where sipping a cocktail feels like a cinematic moment — and that’s exactly the point.
The jewel in the crown of the Polo Club Hotel is undoubtedly the Empress Suite. Designed to impress at every turn, this expansive space oozes luxury and drama in equal measure. Think Versace furniture, a hot tub-style bath with views over the manicured lawns, and a sprawling balcony complete with dining furniture and sun loungers. If you can stretch to it, this suite delivers serious star power.

This is a gloriously opulent hotel — it shouts from the rooftops, unapologetically, but does it all with undeniable style. If Versace is considered over the top, then honestly, I’m quite happy to be right up there with it. If you’re in the mood for a stay with more swag than Beyonce, then you absolutely must book yourself into The Polo Club Hotel. And when you do — tell them I sent you.
