Saturday 26th Oct 2024 |

As nature begins its most breathtaking transformation into autumn, landscapes will be painted with vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold. This season, we invite you to explore some of the quieter, picturesque destinations on offer. These hidden gems promise a unique autumn experience and more than just intimate views.

Washington, DC, USA
Though famous for its stunning spring display of cherry blossoms, Washington DC bursts into colour from late September to early November. The city’s vast collection of trees – including stately oaks and graceful maples – invite locals and tourists alike to engage in the delightful pastime known as ‘leaf-peeping’. This classic autumn activity involves travelling to view and photograph the changing foliage and offers a great way to experience Washington’s natural beauty alongside its rich history. Autumn in DC is the ideal backdrop for a picture-perfect holiday, with iconic locations including the National Mall, the US National Arboretum, Rock Creek Park, Georgetown and Capitol Hill.

County Armagh, Northern Ireland

County Armagh in autumn is not just about the leaves, but a celebration of the harvest. With their apple orchards are the heart of the seasonal spectacle of colours brimming with ripe, juicy apples, each is a testament to the region’s centuries-old heritage. Guests should be sure to sample some of the Armagh Cider Company’s delicious drinks, as well as experience the whole cider-making process from blossom to bottle. For those seeking the quintessential autumn experience, a visit to The Argory provides plenty of beautiful photo opportunities. This National Trust property, celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, offers one of the most stunning displays of autumn colour in the region. The Lime Tree Trail is a particular favourite, with its majestic avenue of lime trees creating a very photogenic golden canopy. Local festivals and markets abound, where you can sample fresh apple cider, pies, and other seasonal delights.

Toulouse, France

Toulouse is great year-round, but really sparkles in the autumn months. With mild autumnal days, an abundance of green spaces and foodie favourites, September to November is a great time to visit the city. To explore gardens that look like they’re straight out of a painter’s palette, travellers should head to Jardin du Grand Rond – one of the many beautiful gardens in Toulouse. The historic garden dates back to the 18th century and come autumn will be adorned with hues of gold, amber and red, making for the perfect fall photo-op! From there, travellers should take to the Canal du Midi cruise which offers a unique perspective of the city and a chance to watch the ‘pink city’ really live up to its name as the sun sets over a sea of autumn colours. To end the ideal day of autumnal themed exploring, travellers should head to a local bistro to try ‘cassoulet’ – a classic bean stew with pork and duck from the region that is particularly good this time of year.
