A new colour has entered the chat: navy. From the catwalk to fashion columns, this unexpected neutral is being tipped as the “new black”.
Lisa Illis, head of womenswear design at M&S explains the inspiration behind the trend and how to wear it:
“From trench coats to accessories and knitwear to partywear, the AW2024 catwalks were awash with navy blue. In fact, Tagwalk reported a 106% increase across catwalks.
“We’ve since seen the likes of Kendall Jenner, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Katie Holmes striding out in this strong, sophisticated colour. Here’s how to welcome this deep hue into your own style this season.”
1. Colours to wear with navy
“While navy is being dubbed the “new black”, it’s not always as easy to pair other colours with. While I don’t believe in hard and fast fashion rules, colours I’d recommend wearing with navy if you’re unsure include camel and warm tones.
“Camel and navy make for a chic and classic combination, while warm-toned greys also marry nicely. If you’re looking to add some playful colour to your outfit, a sunshine yellow, cherry red or lime green could make a great contrast. A colour pop always adds a playful edge to soften a darker outfit.”
2. Don’t rule out black
“You can forget what you’ve been told about black and navy being a no-no. I’ve seen some stunning styling combining these two dark neutrals.”
3. Dig out your dark denim
“One of the best things about this trend is it won’t necessarily involve buying anything new. Most of us already have some dark wash denim in our wardrobes. Dark blue denim is the perfect way to participate in the navy colour trend using what you already own.”
4. Sport stripes
“Rugby shirts are the athleisure statement piece of the season. They’re comfy and casual – perfect for off-duty, autumn dressing. And navy is the perfect hue for this once hyper-masculine shape.
“Striking colour combinations include navy and white, navy and red, and navy and green. I’d recommend shopping from the men’s tops range for a particularly slouchy, oversized look. Or you can simply size up when shopping the women’s range.”
5. Party in navy
“Party season is incoming. And while red, gold and silver are classic partywear colour choices, navy exudes glamour in much the same way. Velvet, sequins and lace are fabulous festive party dress fabrics that look striking in navy.
“As a styling tip, I’d avoid wearing navy tights with a navy dress. Black tights work much better.”
