Garden Party

It’s Time for a Summertime Garden Party

Tuesday 16th May 2023 |

The sun is making its way out, and although it seems to be at the pace of a very tired snail, it looks like summer is actually going to try and live up to its name.

What better time to get everyone you care about around and in the garden for a little (or large) gathering to enjoy the light nights and catch up?

If you want to be the host with the most, this piece has got you covered. It will take a look at some basics that will make your guests comfortable and have fun.

Pick a Date (And Check the Weather)

Picking a date for your party is probably the first port of call. You need to have a date that works for almost everyone (or at least the people you really want there), and there are usually a couple of factors to consider. Childcare, other commitments, service hire, and the weather will all need to align.
It might be May, but there is still every chance that heavy rain and even cold spells are around the corner, and while you don’t have control over the weather, it is best to be prepared. In case the heavens open, it is always worth having a backup plan, such as a marquee, or cancelling the entire event to sit in your pyjamas. Whatever suits you.

Food and Drink

Garden PartyLure your guests with the promise of fine cuisine or at least some excellent triangle sandwiches. It is up to you whether you want a traditional garden party with a classic British buffet or whether you would prefer something a little more fancy. Consider your guests and what they might like, and then go from there. Whatever you do, make sure there are non-alcohol drink options and plenty of cups of tea available. If you are going to provide food and drink yourself, investing in useful gadgets such as a hot water dispenser will create a convenience that re-boiling the kettle every 10 minutes cannot possibly offer.

Plan Your Entertainment

Entertainment is an important part of any party, and if you have your garden as the main location, you can get a little more creative with what you can offer. Bubbles, trampolines, and bouncy castles can make great fun for children (and adults if they are feeling it), and lawn games are also a nice touch.

If you really want to impress your neighbours, you might even consider a boom box or a music system to get the tunes going – just make sure to be a summer cliché and play only the feel good classics. Mungo Jerry’s ‘In the Summertime’ is essential.

Toilet Access

Providing access to a bathroom is essential unless you are happy for your guests to relieve themselves in the plant pots. If you are lucky enough to have a downstairs toilet, this can work well, but if the idea of muddy footprints going up to your ensuite is enough to call off the whole thing, maybe invest in some portaloos!
