With spring round the corner, more of us look to refresh and update our homes. However, creating the perfect space that is functional yet still in keeping with your personal taste can be challenging.

No matter how much space you’re working with, good interior design choices can allow you to create a light and airy yet cosy haven for yourself.

From using accessories to getting lighting right, luxury furniture experts at BoConcept have rounded up the five interior design tips everyone needs to know. They’ll show you how you can create a living space that you’ll be proud of.

Let your personality shine with accessories

Accessories can inject personality, character, and vibrancy into a space. They can even tie together various design elements, creating a more cohesive feel. Accessories allow you to express your style and ensure your room represents you.

Interior design

When accessorising, try to strike a balance between decorative elements and open space by making sure that each piece contributes to the overall theme. This will allow the accessories to add character and personality to a room, whilst avoiding visual clutter. We recommend starting with one accessory and building your way up slowly, considering the room as a whole each time you make a purchase.

Accessories like vases, cushions and candles can add pops of colour and texture, creating a well balanced interior. Make sure to carefully consider your accessory choice to achieve a well-rounded and aesthetically pleasing design.

Have a clear vision

Make sure that you have a clear plan in mind before starting an interior design project. While it can be tempting to rush into transforming your room without taking the time to plan the end result, this can lead to impulse buying trending products without considering how new purchases will fit into the room.

Instead, try to define a theme for the room: consider its purpose, the mood you would like to create, and the overall aesthetics you are trying to achieve. This will help you make informed decisions about colour palettes, furniture choices and decor, as well as ensure your design choices fit the room’s functionality. Planning will also enable you to budget and avoid overspending on specific items.

We would advise you to consider what colours and textures you like and what feeling you want to achieve in that space. Figuring out where to start can be tricky, so it may be worth consulting interior design experts. If you need some expertise, we have decades of experience supporting people who want to transform their homes or spaces.

Choosing the right colour

When choosing a wall or upholstery colour, remember to consider how that colour looks in different lights. A wall that appears lovely and subtle at golden hour may look garish in the daytime. It can even clash with furniture!

When choosing your paint, use your samples on the walls you intend to paint and observe the colours in day and evening lighting, as well as in natural and electric light.

Make sure you are well-versed in complementary colours. We would recommend that you start with two colours you like and build from them.

If you’re not sure where to start, safe colours include white, grey and brown. However, don’t be constrained by safe tones – if you prefer a bold colour, go for it! Choose colours you genuinely love and stay true to your personal taste for an interior that will stand the test of time.

Put lighting first

When designing a room, lighting is one of the most important factors. Lighting has a big impact on mood and can be the difference between a gloomy, uncomfortable room and a bright and welcoming space.

Firstly, consider the purpose of the room you are designing, as well as the feeling you are trying to create. For example, if you are redesigning your office, you must ensure that your workspace is well-lit. You should also consider the impact of any natural light sources – for example, will your TV or computer screen have an annoying glare if you place it directly opposite a window?

While it is important to ensure that your space gets as much natural light as possible, don’t forget that you will need to light your room in the evenings. Overhead lights are great for visibility but can sometimes be harsh and overwhelming or insufficient and dim. Combine overhead lights with floor and table lamps and wall lights to create the ideal ambience for your space.

A good lighting plan will include ambient lighting for the room as a whole, task lighting for specific activities and accent lighting to highlight anything you want to show off, such as your favourite artwork.

Consider size

Considering size when planning an interior can be the difference between a space feeling awkward and being balanced and harmonious. Think about the size of furniture, rugs, and decor items in relation to the room’s dimensions. Choosing furniture that is too large for a small space can make it appear cramped, while small furniture in a large room may feel lost and insignificant.

Making sure any rugs are the right size is also key for ensuring good visual proportions in a room. Ideally, a rug should be big enough for your sofa to fit on it with an extra foot of space on all sides. In a dining room, your rug should be large enough for all your dining chairs to have all four legs when pulled out from the table. Finally, your bedroom rug should extend 2 feet from the side of your bed.

Interior design

We recommend balancing out your furniture by using a variety of sizes. The perfect room will have tall and short and large and small furniture, creating a ‘skyline’ which is more visually interesting.

Additionally, consider proportion. For example, a low coffee table will look awkward in front of a more upright sofa. Always measure your space and furniture to get sizing right.

To summarise

By following our interior design tips, you’ll create a cohesive, welcoming space that showcases your personality and will stand the test of time.

The key to creating an ideal interior is taking the time to consider the desired purpose of your space and carefully selecting key pieces that fit best. It’s also important to use colour and lighting to create a bright room that fits the desired mood.

Above all, your home should be a place that you feel comfortable and content in – regardless of trends – make sure your home represents you and your taste.
