Cold Weather Hacks: How to Dry Your Bedding Indoors This Winter

As temperatures drop and the rain returns, drying laundry becomes one of Britain’s biggest household headaches. From damp rooms to musty sheets, finding ways to get bedding dry when it’s too cold for the washing line is a seasonal struggle.

Thankfully, mattress experts at Winstons Beds have shared their top cold-weather hacks to help you dry bedding efficiently throughout autumn and winter — no tumble dryer required.

“Not being able to pop the washing on the line can be frustrating, especially as energy prices remain high,” says Rebecca Swain from WinstonsBeds.com.
“But there are still simple and effective ways to dry bedding indoors during the colder months.”

Six Effective Ways to Dry Bedding Indoors

1. Use a Drying Rack Near a Window

Invest in a sturdy drying rack that allows bedding to hang freely with good airflow.
Place it near a window or open vent on dry days to mimic outdoor circulation. Avoid bunching up sheets — giving them space helps prevent damp patches and lingering odours.

2. Get a Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier pulls excess moisture from the air, dramatically speeding up drying time.
Many modern units have a “laundry mode” specifically designed for this purpose.
It’s especially effective when the central heating is on, keeping condensation and musty smells at bay.

3. Add an Extra Spin Cycle

Before hanging up your bedding, run an additional spin cycle on your washing machine.
This removes more water upfront, meaning less moisture for you to deal with indoors — and much faster drying overall.

4. Use a Fan for Air Circulation

If the air inside your home feels stagnant, a fan can help replicate a gentle outdoor breeze.
Point it toward your laundry to improve airflow and help sheets dry evenly. Rotate bedding occasionally so every area gets exposure to moving air.

5. Don’t Overcrowd

It’s tempting to hang multiple items on one rack, but overcrowding traps moisture and slows down drying.

“Washing smaller loads and spacing sheets properly makes a big difference,” advises Swain.
This also prevents the damp, musty smell that can develop in cold, poorly ventilated rooms.

6. Use the Tumble Dryer (Smartly)

If you’re short on time, partially tumble-dry bedding for 10–15 minutes before air-drying it.
This removes the bulk of moisture while still saving energy — and leaves your bedding toasty if you plan to hop straight into bed.

Extra Tip: Warm Bedding Before Bedtime

For a cosy treat, finish drying your bedding in the dryer for a few minutes before making the bed.
Not only does it eliminate leftover moisture — it gives you that freshly-laundered, warm-sheet feeling that makes winter nights instantly better.
