How Long Does Menopause Last? A Quick Guide

Friday 14th Jan 2022 |

On average, American women enter menopause at fifty-one years old. This answers only one of many questions women have about menopause.

Some others are, what is menopause? What are menopause symptoms? How long does menopause last? Keep reading to find out the answer to these questions and more.

What Is Menopause?

The biological process of menopause happens in three stages:

  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause
  • Postmenopause

Menopause occurs because your body is not producing as much estrogen as it did in your younger years. As a result, your menstrual cycles will get farther apart and eventually stop.

First, you are perimenopausal. In this phase, your body is preparing for menopause. You’ll notice missing periods, a change in your regular flow, and other symptoms that we’ll discuss later.

You’ll know you’ve reached menopause once you’ve stopped menstruating for one full year. After this point, you are considered postmenopausal.

How Long Does Menopause Last?

Most women are perimenopausal for four years before menopause. Some women are in this stage for ten or twelve years, although it’s highly unlikely.

Menopause duration starts and ends at different ages. The most common time is after 45 and before 55. Early menopause is the term for women who start before the age of 45.

In these years, you’ll experience various symptoms due to hormonal changes. During postmenopause, you’ll continue to have these symptoms for about four more years.

Menopause Symptoms

Out of all the menopause symptoms, hot flashes are the most common. Other symptoms to look out for are:

  • Periods becoming irregular
  • A dry vagina
  • Frequent urination or urinary tract infections
  • Headaches
  • Dryness of mouth, eyes, and skin
  • Breasts that are sore or less full
  • Thinner hair
  • Chills

Menopause symptoms do more than affect the body; they inflict the mind, too. It isn’t at all uncommon for women to feel anxious, depressed, or sleepless. You may also lose your sex drive or your ability to concentrate.

Menopause Treatment

Every woman in her forties or fifties knows that menopause symptoms can interfere with everyday life.

Thankfully, there’s menopause treatment for most symptoms. Women losing hair can experiment with different types of antidandruff shampoos. Then you combat vaginal dryness with lubricants or vaginal moisturizers.

Changes in your hormones may be the biggest symptom you’re looking to regulate. Premarin is a medication that reintroduces estrogen back into your body.

It also fights against these other symptoms:

  • Hot flashes
  • Chills
  • Atrophy or inflation in your vagina
  • Feelings of faintness or dizziness

Preparing for Menopause

As we discussed, answering the question, “How long does menopause last?” differs from woman to woman. Menopause duration itself is twelve months. Menopause symptoms, however, occur for years before and after menopause.

The more you know now, the better you’ll get at identifying menopause symptoms and finding menopause treatment.
