5 Delicious Homemade Hummus Variations to Elevate Your Summer Meals

I’ll admit something that might be a little controversial…

I love the taste of hummus, but the texture has never completely won me over. I hate to say it, but some shop-bought versions remind me of wet sand. They’re often thick, grainy and just a little too dense for my liking.

That’s exactly why I started making my own.

One of the best things about homemade hummus is that you can make it exactly how you like it. I blend mine for longer than most recipes suggest, creating a silky smooth texture that’s rich, creamy and perfect for scooping onto warm flatbreads or spooning alongside salads.

I’ve been making my own hummus for years now, and if you’d like to master the classic version first, you’ll find my foolproof homemade hummus recipe here on Crave.

With barbecue season in full swing and colourful summer salads appearing on the table almost every evening, I’ve been looking for ways to give my favourite dip a little refresh. Starting with the same simple base, it’s amazing how a handful of extra ingredients can completely transform the flavour.

These are the five variations I’ve been making on repeat this summer, and I honestly can’t decide which one I love the most.

1. Hot Jalapeño Hummus

If you like your food with a little kick, this is the one for you. Pickled jalapeños bring plenty of heat without overpowering the creamy chickpeas, while a splash of the pickling juice adds a subtle tang that keeps everything fresh.

Perfect with: Burgers, grilled chicken, tacos, tortilla chips and barbecue platters.

2. Preserved Lemon & Herb Hummus

This might just be my favourite.

The salty, citrusy flavour of preserved lemons completely transforms classic hummus, while fresh parsley, coriander and mint add a bright, summery freshness that works beautifully with grilled meats, seafood or roasted vegetables.

If you’ve never cooked with preserved lemons before, this is a brilliant place to start.

Perfect with: Lamb, halloumi, salmon, falafel or Mediterranean salads.

3. Roasted Garlic Hummus with Brown Butter

This version feels like something you’d order in a restaurant.

Whole roasted garlic becomes wonderfully sweet once cooked, melting into the hummus without the harsh bite of raw garlic. Just before serving, spoon over nutty brown butter and finish with crispy garlic slices, fresh chives and cracked black pepper for an indulgent twist.

Perfect with: Warm sourdough, steak, roast chicken or sharing boards.

4. Roasted Red Pepper & Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus

Sweet roasted peppers and intensely flavoured sun-dried tomatoes bring a taste of the Mediterranean to every mouthful.

It’s rich, colourful and one of those dips that mysteriously disappears within minutes whenever friends come round.

Perfect with: Grilled vegetables, antipasti, wraps and summer picnics.

5. Smoky Paprika Hummus

If barbecue food had its own hummus, this would be it.

Smoked paprika adds warmth rather than heat, giving the hummus a subtle smoky flavour that’s incredible with grilled meats and charred vegetables. I like to finish it with a drizzle of olive oil, a dusting of extra paprika and a handful of crispy roasted chickpeas for crunch.

Perfect with: BBQ chicken, sausages, kebabs and grilled corn on the cob.

Which one will you try first?

The beauty of homemade hummus is that once you’ve perfected the classic recipe, the possibilities are almost endless. Whether you prefer fresh and zesty, rich and indulgent or something with a little spice, these five variations are an easy way to bring new flavours to your summer table.

One thing’s for sure… I’ll never go back to that grainy supermarket texture again.
