Why Gardeners Are Being Urged to Leave Water Out for Wildlife This Summer

Monday 19th May 2025 |

With hot and dry weather on the horizon, homeowners are being encouraged to lend a helping hand to local wildlife by placing fresh water sources in their gardens.

Wildlife experts at GardeningExpress.co.uk are saying this simple act of kindness can significantly help birds and other wildlife cope with the scorching heat.

While many of us love to sit back and bask in the sun when the weather gets hot, it’s a very difficult time for wildlife as their natural water sources may dry up, putting them at risk of dehydration.

Leaving out a shallow dish with fresh water in a shaded part of the garden can be a lifesaver for thirsty wildlife.

Make sure to regularly clean the dish and refill it with fresh water to prevent the spread of disease and the buildup of algae, which can be harmful to wildlife.

The water dish should be wide and shallow to ensure that birds, insects and other small creatures can access the water easily without the risk of falling in.

It might be a good idea to place a few twigs or stones in the dish for insects like bees and butterflies so they’ve got a surface to safely land on and drink.

To ensure other predators such as neighbourhood cats are not bothering the wildlife, try to avoid placing water dishes too close to bushes and trees.

It’s also recommended to put a bird bath in the garden so that birds have a place to bathe and regulate their body temperature which is crucial since they don’t have sweat glands.

Chris Bonnett, the founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk said: “Gardeners can offer a lifeline to their local wildlife in the heat, and it takes very little effort to make a big difference.

“With their natural water sources often drying up during dry spells, wildlife are extremely vulnerable to dehydration if we don’t help them out.

“We’re lucky because we can pour ourselves an ice-cold drink or turn on the air conditioner when we feel too hot, but the wildlife doesn’t have that luxury.

“They have to rely on the environment around them to survive and that’s where we can step in.

“Something as quick and easy as putting out a dish of fresh water in the garden can be the difference between life and death for your local birds, hedgehogs, butterflies or bees.

“You could also consider adding a bird bath to your outdoor space. Not only can it add an elegant touch to your garden, but it also provides a place for birds to bathe which allows them to keep their feathers in top condition.

“Helping out wildlife doesn’t have to be complicated or costly, and everyone can contribute, whether you have a large garden, a small patio or even just a balcony.”
