From Ice Cubes to Coffee: Spring Prep Tips for Houseplants

Sunday 16th Mar 2025 |

As the days get longer and the sun starts shining a little brighter, your houseplants are ready to shake off their winter coat and burst into new growth.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh their care routine—think repotting, feeding, and giving them a well-earned spring clean.

The plant experts, Beards & Daisies, and founder, Jo Lambell, have given their top tips and tricks to get your houseplants ready for Spring.

Remove dead leaves to encourage new growth
Beards & Daisies advise to remove any dead or yellowing leaves. Dead leaves can drain energy from your plant. By removing them, you allow your plant to focus its energy on producing fresh, healthy growth. Make sure to use clean scissors or pruning shears to avoid causing damage. This simple step not only keeps your plant looking tidy but also encourages new, vibrant growth as the warmer months roll in.

Shower your plants
Before you dive into spring care, give your plants a gentle shower. Dust, dirt, and residue can block sunlight and hinder photosynthesis. A lukewarm shower (either in the sink or the bathtub) will clean their leaves and help them soak in more light. Just make sure to dry them off gently to prevent waterlogging.

Give them a leaf massage
Your houseplants love a good massage! Gently rub the leaves to help increase circulation and improve airflow. This helps stimulate growth and prevents the buildup of dust, which can make the leaves look dull. Plus, your plants might just appreciate the attention.

Repot with coffee grounds
Spring is the perfect time to repot your plants, but here’s a little hack: mix used coffee grounds into the new potting soil. Coffee grounds are packed with nitrogen, which gives your plants a natural nutrient boost, promoting healthy growth and vibrant green leaves. Just make sure to mix them in well to avoid clumping!

DIY humidity tray with pebbles and water
Spring brings warmer air, but indoor spaces can still be dry, especially when the heating’s on. Make a humidity tray by filling a shallow dish with pebbles and adding water just below the surface of the stones. Place your plants on top, the water will evaporate, increasing humidity around them and keeping them happy.

Move them to a new spot
As the days lengthen, your plants might need a change of scenery to catch all that precious spring sunlight. Experiment with new locations to ensure they’re getting enough light. Remember, the spring sun can be a lot stronger than you think, so some plants may need a little shade until they get used to the change. Also, keep in mind that some certain houseplants don’t thrive in direct sunlight. If they start showing signs of leaf burn or stress, try moving them to a spot with indirect light, where they can still soak up the sunshine without getting overwhelmed. This way, you can find the perfect balance for all your plants as they wake up for the season.

Add an ice cube to the soil
Hydration is key, but overwatering can be a problem, especially if the weather’s changing. Try adding an ice cube to the soil instead of watering all at once. The ice melts slowly, giving your plants a steady supply of water without the risk of waterlogging or root rot. It’s like a mini spring spa treatment for your plants.
