Food to avoid before flying

Jet setters are being told to which foods to avoid before a flight to avoid uncomfortable bloating and frequent toilet trips.

Experts at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk have identified five foods and drinks that should be avoided for a smooth plane journey.

Those heading on a long haul flight should limit their alcohol intake or run the risk of experiencing disrupted sleep and horrible jet lag.

Travellers are also being advised to avoid food and drinks that causes uncomfortable bloating such as fried foods and raw vegetables.

Instead they should opt for protein rich foods and slow burning complex carbs like yoghurt and granola pots, turkey sandwiches and egg and avocado on toast.

These nutritional foods will help ease discomfort on the plane and help holidaymakers fight jet lag when they land.

Nic Shacklock from Online-Bedrooms said: “The foods you eat before a flight can affect the quality of your journey and your sleep.

“If you’re heading on a long haul flight you’ll probably want to get some shut eye so it’s important to stay clear of things like alcohol which can ruin the quality of your sleep and exacerbate jet lag symptoms.

“Those that tend to suffer from bloating should also stay away from fizzy drinks and anything with a lot of raw vegetables. When flying, it can be harder to digest these sorts of foods and drinks and it can lead to a pretty uncomfortable flight.

“Eating the right foods while flying will help you overcome jet lag much faster so make sure you’re eating foods with protein and slow burning complex carbs instead.”

Foods and drinks to avoid when flying:

  1. Fizzy drinks

Carbonated and fizzy drinks release air as they move through our digestive system which causes us to bloat. Consuming these on or before your flight increases the risk of experiencing uncomfortable bloating.

  1. Coffee

The caffeine in coffee stimulates bowel movements so you may want to avoid drinking on the plane and just before you board your flight.

  1. Fast or fried food

You might be tempted to make a trip to your favourite fast food chain before catching your flight but be careful. If you experience uncomfortable bloating and gas, stay clear of fast food as its high sodium content can exacerbate your problem.

  1. Salads

A salad sounds like the healthiest option before a flight but raw vegetables like onions, peppers and tomatoes can be harder for our body to digest causing discomfort on long flights.

  1. Alcohol

Alcohol can lead to frequent toilet trips on the plane and if you’re heading on a long haul flight it can disrupt your sleep quality and actually make you feel more jet lagged.
