Experts Reveal If Painting Radiators Black Really Reduces Energy Bills
Social media is buzzing with claims that painting radiators black can help cut household energy bills. The theory suggests darker radiators absorb and emit more heat than lighter ones, making homes warmer for less. But according to energy experts at Grant Store, the truth is less dramatic than many believe.
“Darker surfaces can absorb and emit slightly more heat than lighter colours,” say the experts. “A black radiator can technically emit a little more heat than a white one, but the difference is very small and unlikely to make a noticeable impact on your bills.”
That’s because radiators mainly work by heating the air around them, which circulates throughout the room. The paint colour doesn’t change this process in any significant way.
Even if there is a marginal improvement, it’s influenced more by other factors: how efficient your boiler is, whether your home is draught-proofed, and the condition of the radiators themselves. Simply painting them won’t deliver meaningful savings.
For electric radiators, the advice is even stronger: never paint them. Doing so can damage the appliance, affect its ability to radiate heat, or even seep into the electronic controls. Manufacturers may also refuse to honour warranties if the unit has been painted.
Instead of reaching for a paintbrush, experts recommend focusing on proven energy-saving methods:
- Regularly bleed radiators
- Book annual boiler services
- Fit reflective panels behind radiators
- Lower the thermostat by just one degree
“If you like the look of a black radiator, there’s no harm in repainting a traditional one for style reasons,” Grant Store concludes. “But if your goal is cutting costs, there are far better steps to take. Proper maintenance, insulation, and efficient heating habits will always deliver greater savings than a coat of paint.”
