As the sun starts to shine and our diaries fill with beach days and beer garden plans, we’re quick to invest in glow-boosting skincare, fresh summer fragrances, and hair products to match the season. But there’s one body part that often gets left behind…our feet.
Despite carrying us everywhere, they’re often overlooked when it comes to self-care. Beauty experts, however, are urging us to give them the attention they deserve.
Maria Mukaranda, Beauty Editor at Cosmetify, explained: “In winter, our feet are hidden away in socks and boots. But as the warmer months arrive, we’re slipping into sandals, strolling along the sand, and enjoying the sunshine, meaning our feet are suddenly taking centre stage.
“A flawless pedicure can transform your entire look and help you step out with confidence this summer, instead of self-consciousness.”
Curious how to transform your feet this season? Maria shared her tips:
Don’t skip the scrub
“A survey found that less than half of Brits wash their feet when showering. This is likely because they think the soapy water from the shower covering their feet is enough to do the trick.
“Washing your feet, however, is crucial for their appearance and health. Not only does it prevent foot odour and bacteria build-up, but it also keeps calluses and hard skin at bay, a common cause of anxiety when it comes to getting our feet out.
“If you’re someone who tends to skip washing their feet, it’s not too late to get into the habit. Use warm water, a mild soap, and an exfoliating body polisher or wash cloth to give them the attention they deserve.
“Pay special attention to the heels, between the toes, and soles, as this is where bacteria build-up is most prominent.”
Keep your toenails trimmed and tidy
“Long fingernails can be a fabulous addition to any look. Toenails, however, should be kept on the shorter side.
“This prevents ingrown toenails and discomfort when wearing closed-toe shoes. It also contributes to a more well-groomed appearance and lays the foundation for nail polish.
“Trim once or twice a week, cutting the toenails straight across.”
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
“Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, allowing for soft, even, and smooth feet while keeping those pesky calluses away.
“There are two ways to exfoliate: chemical or physical. For the smoothest results, incorporate both.
“Chemical exfoliation is essential for reaching deeper layers of skin, where physical exfoliants can’t penetrate. Products containing BHA (beta hydroxy acid) and lactic acid are particularly effective.
“Consider investing in a good foot peel. These dissolve dead skin over time, revealing baby-soft feet beneath. However, be sure to only use them once every two to three weeks. Overuse can lead to sensitivity or damage to the skin’s barrier.
“After using a chemical exfoliant, physical exfoliation removes the dead skin cells on the surface.
“A pumice stone works excellently for this step. Not only does its reusability make it an environmentally friendly option, but also a budget-friendly one, too.
“Rub in circular motions on the drier areas of the feet, such as the heels and always follow up with a hydrating foot cream.”
Lock in hydration
“Dry skin is more prone to shedding, which can give your feet a dull and rough appearance. To prevent this, ensure that you keep them well-hydrated.
“A great hack is sleeping in socks with a thick moisturising cream on your feet. The socks create a barrier that prevents the moisture from evaporating, locking in hydration throughout the night.
“Additionally, consider investing in a foot mask. These can make for a relaxing, spa-like experience when paired with a face mask and help to deeply nourish the skin. Look out for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and shea butter, which soften and repair dry, cracked areas.
“If you’re wearing sandals, think about carrying a moisturising lotion with you in your bag. This means that as soon as you notice a dry patch, you can nip it in the bud.”
Don’t forget to tan
“To avoid looking as though you’ve been sunbathing with your socks on and give your tan a more seamless, natural look, don’t forget to tan your feet.
“After exfoliating and moisturising, apply self-tan generously to your feet and ankles. If you prefer a lighter application, consider using a mist to gently spritz your feet a few hours before your outing.
“To finish, wipe off any excess product from your toenails with makeup remover.”
Finish with polish
“Finish your foot care routine by applying your favourite nail polish to your toenails. Not only does this instantly elevate your summer look, but a fresh coat of colour can make your feet look healthier and better cared for.
“Top off your polish with a high-shine topcoat to extend wear time and prevent chipping. Matching your toenail colour to your manicure, or even your outfit, ensures you look polished from head to toe. Literally!”
