The calm-cation is the latest travel trend, as Brits search for seclusion from their busy working lives, somewhere remote, beautiful – and of course, calm.
With “scenic views” and “nature therapy” some of the top trending travel hashtags on TikTok in the UK, and Google searches for “relaxing weekend getaways” up 24% year on year, it’s clear we are eager to escape and experience restful retreats, where we can soak up beautiful, natural scenery.
When it comes to calm-cations, the recipe is simple; find somewhere where you can rest without having a check list of things to do or see, preferably in a natural setting. It’s defined as looking for a restorative and wellness holiday to detox from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
High above the valley of Langdale lies Pye Howe, a 17th century cottage with stunning views, extensive gardens and cosy interiors. Available over the summer from £139 per night for a 7 night stay, this hidden gem is the perfect place to disconnect, unwind and relax.
Said to be one of the oldest buildings in the Lake District, staying there is like going back in time. It has all the modern perks for your comfort – central heating, a washing machine, wifi – but all the antique charm of days gone by. Along with the stunning location, views of the valley and the gardens, the Langdale cottage is the perfect place to disconnect from busy city life and relax.
Inside, you can expect lots of historical character: flag stone floors in the kitchen, a cosy log burner in the living room, and original polished oak floorboards throughout. Outside, as well as the stunning views, there is an orchard and a stone built shed in which you can store bikes – perfect for a cycling holiday getaway! The garden slopes downwards into the valley and provides a great sun trap, so you can sip your morning coffee on the bench outside and take in the view.
From tranquil views to relaxing sounds; as well as the local wildlife, there are two streams running through the garden, providing a serene soundscape to add to your calm-cation experience.
The area also has some of the darkest skies in the country, with the property shielded from nearby village lights by the steep valley sides. This makes it a great place to stargaze on clear, summer nights – another calming activity you can add to your itinerary at this secluded historic escape.
“Especially with the current digital age, we have a lot of people coming to the Lake District for holidays in places such as Pye Howe, to disconnect and have a holiday away from screens,” says the property’s manager, Jerry Rebbeck from Wheelwrights.
“The Lake District has always drawn people to its restorative hills and valleys, from writers such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, to Taylor Swift, who sings about the Lake District in her song ‘The Lakes’ and a desire for a peaceful and natural setting.”
“In Langdale, nature is on your doorstep – there are so many outdoor activities you can do to clear your mind and leave feeling refreshed,” says Jerry.
