9 Beautiful UK Road Trips Families Should Take This Spring

There is something undeniably special about spring in the UK. The roads feel quieter, the countryside begins to wake up, and landscapes that looked grey just weeks ago burst into colour almost overnight. From lamb-filled fields and blossom-lined gardens to waterfalls at full force and coastal routes bathed in fresh sunshine, it may just be the best season for a family road trip.

While summer often gets all the attention, spring offers a sweeter spot for exploring. Days are longer, temperatures are milder, and many of Britain’s most popular beauty spots are far less crowded than they will be in July and August.

With that in mind, motoring experts at LeaseLoco.com have highlighted nine of the most rewarding places across the UK to visit by car this spring. From iconic national parks to hidden gems families may not have considered, these are the scenic destinations worth adding to your sat nav now.

1. The Lake District, Cumbria

Few places do spring quite like the Lake District – it’s my second home and my personal favourite in this list. Hillsides begin to turn green again, wildflowers appear across the fells, and the lakes shimmer under clearer skies.

Families can enjoy scenic drives between Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick, stopping for waterside walks, picnic spots and cosy cafés along the way. It is one of those destinations that feels made for slow travel. There are countless things to do in the Lake District and for foodies it’s a haven – some of the best meals I have ever eaten have been in Cumbria.

2. The Cotswolds

If your idea of the perfect countryside escape includes honey-stone villages, rolling hills and farm shops stocked with local treats, the Cotswolds delivers in every season — but especially spring.

This is also lambing season, so fields are full of playful newborns, making every country lane feel even more charming. There are so many things to see and do in this part of the country and it has an abundance of wonderful places to dine and beautiful hotels to stay in.

3. Yorkshire Dales

God’s own county – and my home county! How can I not rave about the beauty of Yorkshire?

Spring is one of the best times to visit the Yorkshire Dales, when waterfalls are often at their most dramatic after winter rainfall and the landscape starts to bloom again.

It is also prime lamb-spotting season, with stone-walled fields filled with new life. Add in winding scenic roads and traditional market towns, and it is an ideal family day out.

4. New Forest National Park, Hampshire

The New Forest feels particularly magical in spring. Ancient woodland begins to brighten, heathland opens up in colour, and the famous free-roaming ponies can often be spotted grazing beside the road.

With peaceful villages, woodland trails and plenty of picnic opportunities, it is a relaxed road trip choice for families wanting a slower pace.

5. Alnwick, Northumberland

Cherry blossom season is one of spring’s greatest pleasures, and Alnwick Garden is home to one of the UK’s most striking displays.

Rows of pink blooms create a spectacular backdrop for a family stroll, and the wider Northumberland region offers castles, beaches and coastal drives if you want to turn it into a weekend escape.

6. Lower Drayton Farm, Staffordshire

If younger children are involved, Lower Drayton Farm offers a road trip with built-in entertainment.

Its spring tulip festival brings vibrant colour to the countryside, while farm animals and interactive experiences make it a hands-on family destination rather than just a scenic stop.

7. Exmoor National Park

Exmoor in spring offers a different kind of beauty. The combination of moorland, woodland and coastline creates one of the most varied drives in Britain.

Wildlife lovers may spot red deer calves, foals and a wide range of birds, while the roads themselves feel wonderfully open and peaceful.

8. A82 to Fort William and Ben Nevis, Scotland

For dramatic scenery, few UK drives compete with the A82 through the Scottish Highlands.

The route from Glasgow to Fort William takes in lochs, towering peaks and some of the most cinematic landscapes in the country. At the end of the drive sits Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, surrounded by walking routes and panoramic views.

9. Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park, Wales

A spring drive through Snowdonia combines mountains, lakes and blooming valleys with the added bonus of nearby beaches.

Families can pair scenic stops with adventure attractions such as zip lines or eco-friendly Greenwood Family Park, making it one of the most versatile spring getaways in the UK.

Why Spring Is the Smartest Time to Travel

John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco.com, says spring is one of the most rewarding seasons to hit the road — and it is easy to see why.

Before school holiday traffic and summer crowds arrive, families can enjoy open roads, easier parking, fresher scenery and destinations at their most peaceful.

Sometimes the best trips are not the ones abroad or months in the planning. Sometimes they are a tank of fuel, a packed lunch and a beautiful British road waiting to be driven.
