The Best Spicy Margarita Recipe to Make at Home This Spring
The sun is shining, spring is in full swing and the weekend has finally arrived — what better excuse is there to dust off the cocktail shaker and start practising your pre-summer drinks menu?
While fruity cocktails certainly have their place, I’ve always had a soft spot for a spicy margarita. It feels fresher, sharper and a little more grown-up than some of its sweeter peers. You still get that zingy citrus hit and the smooth warmth of tequila, but with the added kick of chilli and the savoury edge of salt, it becomes something altogether more interesting.
A spicy marg is one of those drinks that instantly makes you feel like you’re on holiday, whether you’re in a city garden, on the patio or simply opening the windows and pretending the British weather is more reliable than it really is.
The good news? They’re incredibly easy to make at home.
What Is a Spicy Margarita?
A spicy margarita is a classic margarita with chilli added for heat. Usually made with tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur and agave or sugar syrup, the spicy version includes fresh chilli slices, chilli-infused syrup or muddled jalapeños.
The result is refreshing, punchy and just fiery enough to keep things interesting.
My Go-To Spicy Margarita Recipe
Ingredients
- 50ml tequila blanco
- 25ml Cointreau or triple sec
- 25ml fresh lime juice
- 10ml agave syrup (or sugar syrup)
- 3–4 slices fresh red chilli or jalapeño
- Ice
- Tajín seasoning for the rim
- Lime wedge to garnish
Method
1. Rim the Glass
Run a lime wedge around the edge of your glass and dip it into Tajín seasoning. This chilli-lime blend gives you the ultimate spicy margarita rim and adds flavour in every sip.
2. Muddle the Chilli
Add the chilli slices to your shaker and gently muddle to release the heat.
3. Add the Rest
Pour in tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and agave syrup. Add plenty of ice.
4. Shake Hard
Shake for 15 seconds until ice cold.
5. Strain & Serve
Fill your prepared glass with fresh ice and strain the cocktail over it.
6. Garnish
Add a lime wedge and an extra slice of chilli if you’re feeling brave.
My Best Tip: Invest in Tajín
If you love spicy margaritas, my number one tip is simple: buy a tub of Tajín.
This Mexican chilli-lime seasoning transforms the rim of the glass and instantly makes homemade spicy margs taste bar-quality. The balance of salt, citrus and gentle heat works perfectly with tequila and fresh lime.
Once you’ve tried it, plain salt feels like a downgrade.
How Spicy Should It Be?
That’s entirely up to you.
- Mild: 1–2 chilli slices
- Medium: 3–4 slices
- Hot: muddle with seeds included
My advice? Start gentle. You can always add more next round.
Me? I put the whole thing in and wait for my friend’s faces to start smoking…..lol
What to Serve With a Spicy Marg
This cocktail loves food. Try it with:
- Nachos and guacamole
- Grilled prawns
- Tacos
- Salted nuts
- Halloumi skewers
- BBQ chicken
Final Sip
Some cocktails are sweet, some are pretty, and some are all show. A spicy margarita has personality. It’s bright, bold, refreshing and just mischievous enough to feel like a proper weekend treat.
If the sun’s out, the shaker’s in reach and the Tajín is open, I know what I’m making first.
