As spring is in full swing, more and more people are turning to a rising trend called ‘April Theory’, the idea that April marks the real start of the year, and the perfect time for a fresh reset.
It’s caught on fast, with searches for the term surging by 255% this past month alone.
But mindset coach Mindy Paul says there’s a problem with waiting for the “right time” to make a change. He believes we shouldn’t be relying on fresh starts tied to key dates, and that holding out for the perfect moment could actually be holding you back.
Here, Mindy shares why true transformation can happen any time, and how to take action now, not later.
Stop waiting for the “perfect moment”
“It’s refreshing to see that people aren’t giving up on their goals post-New Year. However, it can be extremely harmful to your personal development to ‘start when things calm down’ or ‘wait for the right moment’.
“From January 1st, to birthdays, to new seasons or months like April, tying personal progress to the calendar is a common, detrimental trap that people fall in.
“Some key drivers of success are consistency, resilience, and self-motivation. You need to be able to pick yourself back up from productivity dips or slips in focus, no matter the date.”
Why we delay, and how it holds us back
“So why do we keep pushing change into the future? We postpone change largely due to fear and anxiety.
“Leaving the comfort of what we know, even when it’s holding us back, feels scary.
“Fear of failure, embarrassment, or judgement can stop people from even trying. What if the business I start fails? What if I look silly posting content online? What if I get it wrong?
“But by focusing on all the ‘what ifs’, we deny ourselves of opportunity. You stay in your shell, you play small, and you never give yourself the chance to win. Yes, it’s wise to prepare for risk, but it’s even wiser to prepare for possibility.”
Reset at any time, not just in April
While ‘April Theory’ might offer a nice boost in motivation, Mindy says that momentum should be generated by ourselves.
“Goal-setting around specific time periods is a popular habit, but once the hype dies down, so do most people’s plans and aspirations. The real wins come when you learn to advocate for yourself and push forward, regardless of the date.
“It’s not about never slipping up or making mistakes. It’s about what you do after.
“You want to keep your foot on the pedal. And if you take it off? Fine, just get back in the driver’s seat immediately.
“Very few people do that, and that’s what gives you the edge.”
Mindy’s power moves to reset any day
Want to get into the habit of hitting the reset button? Mindy shared his most powerful tips:
“Feeling scared about your next move? Don’t bury your head in the sand. Instead, reframe your fear as fuel. Remember that the fact it scares you means it matters. Let those nerves propel you forward, not hold you back.
“Don’t wait until you ‘feel’ ready. If you do this, you’ll put things off forever. Get used to doing small things that move you forward, keeping in mind that you’re doing the best thing for your future self, not just your present comfort.
“Think beyond the likes of the new year or April. Constantly be thinking of ways that you can improve your mindset, your routines, and your results, starting today.”
