How to Hygge Your Home This Autumn, the British Way

As the darker months approach and families look for warmth and comfort at home, one Scandinavian lifestyle concept is quietly taking over: hygge. It’s more than candles and blankets. It’s a cultural approach to cosiness, connection, and wellbeing that’s now finding its way into British homes.

With the October 2025 energy price cap at £1,755 a year for a typical household, many families are searching for affordable ways to create comfort at home. Hygge offers not just style, but also a way to design spaces that feel both comforting and practical during colder, more expensive months indoors.

Search trend data shows that UK interest in the term ‘hygge home’ reliably surges every September, reaching peak levels in October and November as colder weather sets in. In September 2025 alone, searches jumped 127% compared with the previous quarter.

It’s also showing up on TikTok, where videos about DIY and cosy homes are popular. One DIY makeover has already had over 39K views, showing how many people want comfort at home.

Even celebrities are embracing cosy living. Kate Winslet’s 17th-century beachfront home in West Wittering, West Sussex, has been renovated with weathered oak cladding and modern touches, making it a true hygge retreat by the sea.

Kevin Xing, Product Manager at global construction machinery manufacturer  BOLEO, commented:

“When families talk about hygge, what they really want is a private retreat at home, a space that feels like a luxury cabin or boutique hotel. The challenge is turning everyday rooms into what many call their ‘sanctuary’, with warm lighting, built-in seating, and a sense of complete comfort.”

Hommer Zhao, Director at Wiringo, a global manufacturer of residential cables, also shares his insights:

“When people talk about comfort at home, they often forget the hidden layer that makes it possible: reliable power and a secure electrical system. Cosy lighting, heated spaces, and modern appliances all depend on the infrastructure behind the walls.”

5 Ways to Bring Hygge Into Your Home This Fall

  1. Layer your lighting
Swap harsh overheads for softer options like lamps, wall lights, or candles. Layered lighting makes rooms feel warm and inviting through the darker months.
  2. Create a ‘sanctuary corner’
Dedicate a small space, even just a chair or window seat, for rest. Add cushions and throws to make it a cosy retreat.
  3. Bring nature indoors
Use wood, wool, stone, or plants to add calming, natural textures. These elements connect your home to the outdoors and reduce stress.
  4. Prioritise warmth and efficiency
Seal draughts, improve insulation, and use rugs to trap heat. These small steps keep bills lower while keeping spaces comfortable.
  5. Don’t forget the hidden comfort layer
Reliable electrical systems keep lights, heating, and appliances working safely. Having wiring checked ensures your home is both cosy and secure.

Kevin Xing added, “At the end of the day, hygge is about making homes feel human. It doesn’t require grand renovations, just thoughtful choices that turn ordinary rooms into places of warmth, connection, and calm. In a season where costs and stresses rise, those small changes can make the biggest difference.”
