Colorado in Colour: Where Autumn Paints the Peaks

Colorado’s fall offers a strikingly different colour palette compared to other parts of the United States. Vibrant golden aspens, burnt oranges and deep evergreen tones create a unique backdrop to Colorado’s snow-dusted mountain peaks and crisp blue skies. Thanks to the state’s diverse landscapes, the season unfolds in waves from mid-September to early October, creating an extended window for experiencing the changing colours across different regions. This fall, here’s where to experience the magic of a Colorado autumn.

Drive the Iconic San Juan Skyway
Often called one of the most beautiful drives in America, the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway is a 236-mile loop through southwest Colorado’s dramatic San Juan Mountains. The route passes through old mining towns straight out of old western movies like Durango, Silverton and Ouray, with fiery foliage lining the Million Dollar Highway – a cliff-hugging stretch between Silverton and Ouray. Finish your drive in Telluride, where golden aspens surround a charming mountain town accessible by gondola, with excellent hiking, dining and boutique shopping.

Photograph the Aspens on Kebler Pass
Home to one of North America’s largest contiguous aspen groves, Kebler Pass near Crested Butte is a must-visit for photographers and fall colour chasers. This 30-mile backroad (unpaved but maintained) is lined with endless golden hillsides and wide-open mountain views. Best visited in late September, it’s a quieter and more immersive way to experience Colorado’s high-country magic.

Cruise the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway
Colorado’s first designated scenic byway – the Peak to Peak Highway – stretches 55 miles from Estes Park to Black Hawk, running parallel to the Continental Divide. With sweeping views of craggy peaks, dense aspen forests and rustic mountain towns like Nederland and Ward, it’s an easy day trip with plenty of stops for local breweries, hikes and fall photography. The route also connects to Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest, making it a favourite among road-trippers.

Climb Above the Clouds on Trail Ridge Road
For a literal high point, head to Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park – the highest continuous paved road in North America. Reaching over 12,000 feet in elevation, this 48-mile route connects Estes Park and Grand Lake, offering sweeping views over golden valleys and alpine tundra. Due to early snowfall, the road often closes by mid-October, making early autumn the ideal time to visit.

Sip and Stroll Along the West Elk Loop
The West Elk Loop Scenic Byway is a 205-mile journey through Colorado’s heartland – from Carbondale and Redstone to Paonia, Crested Butte and Aspen. Expect a quieter, more agricultural feel with orchard tours, wineries and charming small towns set against a backdrop of colourful forests and winding rivers. Pair a fall foliage drive with wine tasting in Paonia.
