Experts are warning that Brits could face medical bills of more than £80,000 this summer if they take part in popular holiday activities not covered by standard travel insurance.
With searches for holiday activities up 136% in the past month and more travellers seeking adventure over sunbathing, the risk of being underinsured is higher than ever. According to Quotezone.co.uk, over a third of Brits go abroad without the right cover—or worse, with no travel insurance at all.
Helen Rolph, travel insurance expert at Quotezone.co.uk, explains:
“Many people don’t realise that activities like jet-skiing or quad biking could leave them thousands out of pocket if they’re not properly insured. Even if cover is in place, claims can still be rejected if safety laws are broken, helmets aren’t worn, or alcohol is involved.”
Here are seven popular holiday activities that could invalidate your insurance:
1. Scuba diving
Standard cover may include scuba diving—but often with depth limits or certification requirements. Diving without a qualified instructor or going solo could void your insurance.
2. Jet-skiing
Most basic travel insurance excludes jet-skiing. You’ll need specialist cover, and you must follow local water safety laws to ensure claims aren’t rejected.
3. Banana boats
Some policies cover banana boating under general water sports, but only if you wear a life jacket, stay sober, and use a licensed operator.
4. Quad biking
Rarely included in standard cover. Injuries abroad, such as surgery or emergency evacuation, can easily exceed £80,000 without the right insurance.
5. Scooters or motorbikes
Common in Thailand, Bali, or Vietnam. If you don’t hold the right licence, aren’t wearing a helmet, or ride a bike above your cover’s engine size limit, your claim may be denied.
6. Go-karting
Usually excluded as motorsport. Even with cover, not wearing a helmet or ignoring safety precautions could see claims rejected.
7. Organised sports events
“Mara-cations” and fitness breaks are on the rise, but most policies exclude organised races or marathons. You’ll likely need specialist sports travel insurance to be properly covered.
Final Word
From water sports to marathons, the key message is simple: always check your policy before you take part. Adding the right cover can save you from devastating bills abroad.
