Discover Sauchope Links Holiday Park: A Tranquil Coastal Break in Fife

Golden sands, crystal-clear blue seas, and quaint harbours. You could be forgiven for thinking you were somewhere along the Riviera – but we were in Crail, in the Kingdom of Fife, Scotland.

We were headed to Sauchope Links Holiday Park, invited by Largo Leisure. I chose the early May bank holiday for our visit, and the forecast looked ideal. Who better to join me on the seven-hour journey from Yorkshire than my mum? It turned out to be a brilliant choice: she offered not just company but a seasoned perspective on what would turn out to be a delightfully restful holiday.

The Journey North

We opted to take the A1, a scenic and direct route. Crossing the Queensferry Crossing near Edinburgh and joining the Fife Coastal Route, we took in views of historic towns, ancient castles, and picturesque fishing villages. The sun shimmered on the sea and the quiet roads hinted that a relaxing weekend lay ahead.

We arrived in the late afternoon and were warmly welcomed by manager Karolina, who directed us to our lodge. The beach was practically on our doorstep. The view? Spectacular.

The lodge was beautifully appointed with two bedrooms – a double (my mum quickly claimed it) and a twin. There were two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, comfy living space, and a hot tub with panoramic sea views on the deck. A welcome pack of tea, coffee, and milk was a thoughtful touch.

Exploring Crail

After a restful sleep, we headed to The Golf Hotel for breakfast. My mum enjoyed her first full Scottish breakfast, and I can’t recommend the tattie scones enough.

Crail itself is charming. A well-stocked Co-op, independent shops like Greens (for local produce and deli treats), and J.B. Penns butchers make self-catering easy. Down by the harbour, Roome Bay beach is perfect for families with young children. There’s even a beach library with buckets, spades, and toys.

More Than Just a Holiday Park

Sauchope Links is brilliantly placed for exploring. We tried visiting the old HMS Jackdaw Airfield, now home to Crail Raceway. Much to my mum’s dismay (and my delight), we stumbled into a British stunt championship. Cue a swift exit to nearby St Andrews.

In St Andrews, we explored the Cathedral ruins and wandered the town’s museums and shops. Golf fans will be in heaven – but we were content with history and a gentle stroll.

Day Trips and Hidden Gems

One highlight is the Isle of May, home to puffins, seals, and the odd smuggler legend. It’s only accessible by boat (weather permitting), so book in advance.

Back on the mainland, we enjoyed drinks at the Ship Inn in Anstruther before returning to the lodge for another sunset from the deck – this time with a G&T in hand.

Rainy Day? No Problem

Sunday brought rain, so we visited Scotland’s Secret Bunker. This Cold War relic is fascinating and well worth a visit. Despite being heavily signposted (so not-so-secret), it’s one of the area’s top attractions.

Final Thoughts

Sauchope Links is ideal for couples, families, and retirees alike. Whether you’re after culture, coastlines, or just a peaceful place to soak in a hot tub, this Fife gem delivers.

Pack your bags, bring a camera, and prepare to unwind.
