Expert Warns: These 5 ‘Healthy’ Food Combos May Be Draining Your Energy

One of the most overlooked factors that drain your energy isn’t just screen time or lack of sleep, but what’s on our plates.

Suhail Rivera, a spokesperson from Alkaline Herb Shop, has identified several common healthy food pairings that appear energizing on the surface – but silently drain our energy and leave us staring blankly at the screen.

  1. Coffee with Banana

While bananas (GI 48) provide a burst of natural sugars, coffee’s caffeine acts as a mask – concealing the sugar spike until it’s too late.

“The combination of caffeine and rapidly digesting carbohydrates creates an illusion of sustained energy,” Rivera explains. “But once your blood sugar drops, that energy boost crashes hard – leaving you more drained than before.”

  1. Yogurt with Granola

This combo can pack as much sugar as a candy bar. Many flavored yogurts contain up to 3.2g of added sugar per 100g, and sweetened granola can add another 29g.

“When these two seemingly healthy foods are combined, they trigger an insulin spike – followed by a crash that leaves you foggy and unfocused,” says Rivera.

  1. Peanut Butter with Rice Cake

Rice cakes (GI 85) are light and airy, while peanut butter adds a protein punch – but together, they burn too quickly to sustain energy. Unless the peanut butter is full-fat and unsweetened, it can’t counteract the rice cake’s rapid glucose spike.

“This combo hits fast and fades faster,” Rivera says. “Without fiber or complex carbs, your body burns through it in minutes, leaving you tired and craving more.”

  1. Smoothies with Dairy and Citrus Fruits

Bright, creamy, and refreshing – but not always as energizing as they seem. The fruit’s natural sugars (GI 35–50) can spike blood glucose, while dairy may slow digestion or cause discomfort for some.

“That quick hit of sweetness paired with heavy dairy can leave you feeling sluggish instead of refreshed,” says Rivera.

  1. Salad with Fat-Free Dressing

A bowl of greens might look like a healthy choice, but fat-free dressings often contain added sugars – and without any fat, your body struggles to absorb important vitamins like A, D, E, and K.

Rivera says: “When there’s no fat and a lot of sugar, you’re left feeling unsatisfied and tired not long after,”.

Suhail Rivera, a spokesperson from Alkaline Herb Shop, concludes. “By becoming more aware of how certain meals affect blood sugar, digestion, and hydration, you can make small yet powerful changes to feel more alert and balanced. Choosing complex carbs over refined ones, and avoiding high-sodium or high-fat pairings can help you break free from the energy rollercoaster and reclaim focus throughout the day.”
