Sometimes it happens that you only have a small bedroom space to work with, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create the best one possible. There are so many things that you need to consider when you are trying to get the most out of a small room, but it can be tough to know where to begin. That alone can make the process quite stressful, and that’s where we come in.
We’ve written this article so that those of you who are struggling can get some ideas for starting points, and even use this as a checklist to make sure you create the nicest space possible for you. So, that’s exactly what we’re going to be taking a look at now, keep reading if you would like to find out more.
Storage Is Your Friend
Let’s get started by looking into storage for the bedroom. When you only have a small space, you need to be making the most of storage, which can be tough admittedly. It’s hard to find storage units that can fit in such a tight space, especially when you have everything else that you need in there, but it can be done. If you don’t believe us, you can find plenty of inspiration on social media where people have shared their creative hacks for doing just that.
To get started with this though, you do need to know exactly how much space you’re going to have for storage. If you’ve got a spare corner that doesn’t have anything in it, this could be perfect for a small corner unit for example. There is also the option to store things under your bed if you have one that has an underneath, or one that has drawers attached. We know that some people aren’t massive fans of this type of bed, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do sometimes!
Blackout Blinds
The last thing that anyone wants in the morning is to be woken up by the sun blazing through your curtains, especially if you’re trying to have a lie in. You may also find that curtains hang down in the way, and this bothers you because you can’t really put anything where they hang. So, blackout blinds are going to be a good solution for this. They don’t get in the way, and they block out the large majority of the light, meaning that your room stays nice and dark when you want it to.
You can shop around for these, work out the best deal, and figure out which option will be best for you. Just a quick tip though, make sure that you measure accurately before you purchase anything. Too big or too small and they’re not going to do the job that you want them to do, which could end up ruining the space for you until you can purchase a new one.
Go Bold With The Paint
It’s your bedroom, right? That means that you can have whatever colour you want on the wall and nobody can say a thing about it. If you want red for example, while it’s not a traditional colour for a bedroom, there is absolutely no reason that you cannot do this. It might take a few coats to make it stand out the way that you want it to, but we’re sure that this will look absolutely awesome by the time that you are finished.
The only thing that we would say on the topic of choosing a colour is that if you know you struggle to sleep, a super bright colour might not be ideal. Neon green in the middle night is more likely to keep your brain awake which is the last thing that you need. Aside from that though, you should choose whatever is going to make you happy.
Before you commit to a colour, you also need to make sure that you’ve checked you like the way that it looks on the wall. Sometimes paint colours look different on the picture or in the tin than they do when they’ve had time to dry into your wall.
Choose The Right Bed
Onto one of the most important parts of the whole space – the bed. You want to choose the right bed for your bedroom, and this can be a task and a half. We touched briefly on beds above, but you need to do some proper research when deciding which one you want.
If you’re really cramped oin space, looking into a single bed or small double are likely going to be your best options. While it might not be ideal for what you want, there will still be enough space for you to get a good night of sleep. As long as you choose a high-quality mattress and a bed frame that you like the look of, and fits into the room, that’s what matters.
Try To Keep It As Minimal As Possible
A small bedroom can quickly begin to look cluttered, even with just one or two things laying around. Be sure to keep it neat and tidy at all times, even though this could be an arduous task. Minimalist bedrooms do have their perks and positives, you will find that you sleep much better knowing that there is no clutter laying on your floor. People with tidy bedrooms sleep better knowing they aren’t at risk of tripping over anything if they need to get up at night for a week.
If you are struggling with this, take a look at different storage options. If you have a cupboard then you could use this for storing items that don’t have an official home. It might be you are a fan of cuddly toys, these will need somewhere to live. Be it a cupboard or a shelf, anything that is out of the way and off the floor.
Space For A Desk
Ask yourself if you have space for a desk, this is an important question especially if you need to work or study from home. The last thing you want to do is have to take your work to bed or even the kitchen table. It can be tricky to separate work life and home life if you are working where you live.
In your bedroom, you may just have enough space to add a small desk. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or large. Just give yourself enough surface space for some paperwork, pens, and any tech you use.
There are wonderful space saving desks out there, including ones that fold into the wall when you aren’t using them. You will also need a folding chair that tucks into the table. Weigh up your options and go with the one that suits you and your needs.
Put Your TV On The Wall
If you are trying to save space and make your room look slightly neater then it might really help you to put your TV on the wall. This will save the need for not only the TV being in the way but having to buy a stand for it. TV stands are not small by any stretch of the imagination and can take up a fair bit of room, room that you don’t have. Putting your TV on the wall can be a complicated process, especially if you don’t have an exterior wall that it is going onto.
If you aren’t able to hang the TV yourself then don’t be afraid to ask for help. A handy man or woman could come along with the bracket and hang it for you. Make sure you enquire about prices and what you need to supply. A few people may want you to buy the bracket, while others will already have brackets available.
Multipurpose Dresser
Finally, consider how you are going to incorporate more than one thing into your small bedroom. This is where a multi use dresser comes in handy, you can use it for plenty of things. This could be putting on your makeup in the mornings, then using it as a desk to complete some work in the afternoon. There are so many possibilities, you just need to find one that is big enough to fit in your room without being too big. The last thing you want is to be bumping into it when you are half asleep trying to find the toilet in the middle of the night.
Dressers often come with drawers, this could eliminate your need for a separate chest of drawers to store your underwear and clothing. Shop around to find the dresser that you love the look of. This could be from second hand stores or online shops. Make sure you are also paying a fair price that fits into your budget.
We hope you found this article helpful and it gave you some ideas on how to design your small bedroom. A small bedroom can be a nightmare to work with, but all it takes is a little patience.
