Wear SPF Everyday: Protect Your Skin Year-Round

Wednesday 04th Dec 2024 |

Skin cancer rates have reached record highs, with melanoma cases in the UK projected to exceed 20,800 this year.

Experts are urging the public to adopt year-round sun protection, as winter sun exposure presents unique dangers.

“Many people underestimate the strength of UV rays during the colder months, but winter sun can still cause significant skin damage,” says Dr. Emily Alfonsi, leading medical director at Shade Skin, Skin Cancer Clinic. “Whether you’re skiing in the mountains or taking a frosty morning walk in the UK, UV rays remain a threat.”

The Hidden Dangers of Winter Sun

Snow and high altitudes amplify UV risks during winter. Snow can reflect up to 80% of UV rays, effectively doubling exposure to harmful radiation. Even on overcast days, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds, making daily sun protection essential.

Dr. Alfonsi advises incorporating a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 into your daily skincare routine, regardless of the season.

SPF: A Year-Round Essential

“UV rays don’t take a holiday,” explains Dr. Alfonsi. “Wearing SPF is just as important on a crisp winter day as it is on a hot summer afternoon.”

Tips for winter sun safety:

  1. Apply SPF daily, focusing on exposed areas such as the face, neck, ears, and hands.
  2. Use lip balm with SPF to protect sensitive lips.
  3. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses to shield your eyes and surrounding skin.

The growing popularity of winter holidays like skiing and hiking has brought greater awareness to the importance of winter sun protection. Skincare products tailored for active winter lifestyles—like tinted moisturisers, SPF-infused lip balms, and lightweight sunscreens—are helping make sun safety more accessible.

“Sun protection isn’t seasonal—it’s a lifestyle. Whether it’s sunny, snowy, or cloudy, your skin deserves daily care. With melanoma cases rapidly increasing, experts stress that small, consistent habits can save lives. A simple step like wearing SPF every day can significantly reduce your risk of skin cancer”
