Among these trends, grey interiors continue to be a favourite in the UK, heavily influenced by popular figures like Mrs Hinch and Stacey Solomon.

Recent research from Wayfair reveals that grey remains the most popular interior colour in the UK. But are you using grey effectively in your home?

Grey is the go-to colour for UK interior design

In the UK, grey has emerged as the leading choice for interior colour. With an impressive average search volume of 32,000 per month for grey furniture and decor, it’s clear that homeowners are increasingly drawn to this versatile shade. Its popularity can be attributed to its ability to blend seamlessly with a variety of styles, from modern to traditional, making it a staple in many households.

‘Grey has become a go-to colour for home interiors because it’s versatile and timeless,” says Daniela Venturini, Art Director and Trend Forecaster at Wayfair. “It acts like a blank canvas, allowing other colours to shine through accent pieces and artwork without overwhelming the space. Grey tones range from cool blues to warm, earthy hues, making them adaptable for various rooms and lighting. But using grey correctly is essential – too much or the wrong undertone can feel flat. Balancing grey with warm accents, textures, and pops of colour adds depth, creating a space that’s both inviting and stylish.’

Interior Expert top tips on how to balance grey interiors in the home

Daniela Venturini, Art Director and Trend Forecaster at Wayfair, shares four steps to balance grey interiors in the home:

  1. Create layers with textures and shades

“Grey can feel either sleek or cosy depending on the textures you pair it with. Mix softer fabrics like velvet or wool to create warmth, whilst metal or glass can create contrast. Layering different shades such as charcoal with lighter greys adds depth and interest – avoiding a flat or monotone look.”

  1. Add warmer accents

“Grey tones can often feel cool, so warmer accent colours like beige, tan or even warm woods can help create a friendly atmosphere in the space. Subtle touches of blush pinks, soft yellows and earthy tones can soften the space and add a welcoming feel without overpowering the central grey component”

  1. Play with your lighting

“Lighting can make all the difference when it comes to grey interiors. Natural light works well to bring out the rich undertones in the colour, whilst warm artificial lighting adds extra warmth to the shade. Layering floor lands, pendant lights and wall sconces to keep the space inviting throughout the evening, ensuring the grey doesn’t feel too cold or dull.”

  1. Incorporate decorative accessories

“Decorative accessories are a great way to infuse personality into grey interiors. Consider adding unique vases, patterned cushions or rugs in vibrant colours or interesting textures. These decorative elements can serve as focal points, adding character and warmth to the grey backdrop. Choose items that reflect your personal style to create a curated look that feels inviting and showcases the beauty of grey without feeling sterile.”
