Improving workplace health and wellbeing

Monday 20th May 2024 |

The concepts of “work hours” and “personal time” have steadily eroded as technology has made it easier to stay connected.

Work-life balance has long been a topic of discussion in many parts of the world, but it is only relatively recently that the conversation has started to turn in favour of the employees.

Today’s employers are increasingly making employee wellness a priority through strategies such as flexible work-life balance measures for struggling employees and rewarding employees for meeting their health goals.

Here is a look at how employee work-life balance and well-being can be improved when business leaders implement effective workplace health measures.

Effective workplace health measures

Business leaders can ensure that their employees are thriving both professionally and personally by implementing effective workplace health measures that value proactive care and promote a healthy work-life balance. Here are a few strategies to consider when optimising your workplace for employee well-being.

Open communication

A work environment that punishes honesty or disregards it altogether is unlikely to be successful. Dismissing your employees’ concerns and struggles can lead to gnawing dissatisfaction that wears on physical and mental health.

This strategy helps businesses create an inclusive workplace where everyone feels safe and heard. As explained in this article by Obsidi®, diversity, ethnicity, and inclusion (DEI) in the company culture helps everyone succeed.

Foster open communication in your workplace. Create a space where employees can have honest and proactive discussions about their health without fearing the potential corporate response. This includes common and increasingly pervasive issues such as depression and anxiety.

Consider asking your employees how you can help them heal in the workplace. Reducing workloads (and improving work-life balance in the process), encouraging collaboration among colleagues to help complete work on time, and being flexible about appointments and other obligations are all good ways to enhance employee wellness and encourage a healthy work-life balance.

Wellness programmes

Another way to improve employee well-being is by implementing a wellness programme. Wellness programmes are practices and policies employers can uphold to boost employee morale, reduce stress, and improve employees’ overall health. Business leaders can research trending wellness strategies in the workplace, but some of the more common programmes include:

  • Hybrid/flexible working schedules
  • Paid time off for mental health days
  • Incentives for preventative health screenings

There are many other options, but these are some of the most effective employee wellness solutions being used in different industries throughout the UK. You might notice that the first two options on the list enhance healthy work-life boundaries, and that’s not a coincidence. The most effective wellness programmes make it easier for employees to define “work time” and “personal time”.

Tracking bad habits

The last employee wellness strategy we’ll discuss is tracking bad habits. These programmes reward employees for kicking bad habits such as smoking tobacco or marijuana. You can track progress using effective workplace drug testing kits from trusted providers. For example, Matrix Diagnostics’ kits make it easy for employers and employees alike to monitor drug levels and stay on top of their health goals. Once your employees meet their objectives, reward them for their efforts.

Healthy employees are happy employees, and happy employees are productive employees. Taking steps now to create a safer workplace that promotes wellness and encourages healthy habits and work-life balance can help you build stronger and more effective teams.
