Hot dog fans, this one’s for you! IKEA is excited to announce it will be launching a brand-new plant-based variation of its popular dish, from Monday 16th October 2023. Available at IKEA restaurants across the country¹, this latest addition to IKEA’s expanding plant-based menu, will be sold for an affordable 85p.
The new plant-based offering joins the iconic hot dog, which has been on the IKEA menu for over 40 years now, as well as the popular IKEA plant balls and veggie dog – other customer favourites to tuck into when shopping in store.
Taking on the challenge to create a plant-based hot dog with the same texture as its animal-based offering, the new dish mimics the same sensory experience of biting into a meat based hot dog – so that every bite is just as enjoyable and packed with mouth-watering flavours.
Hot dog fans will relish in the delicious combination of rice protein, onion, apple, salt, pepper. Cutting the mustard, the smokiness replicates the traditional sausage taste in hot dogs, meaning IKEA customers can choose a meat-free meal, without compromising on flavour.
It comes as IKEA has set plans to serve 50% plant-based meals in all in store restaurants by 2025. Also, by this date, IKEA has pledged that 80% of main meals offered in the restaurants will be non-red meat and 80% of all packaged food offered will be plant-based.
Helene von Reis, Food Manager at IKEA of Sweden says that “IKEA is driven by a vision to create a better everyday life for the many people. Through the food business, we can contribute to this by offering a tasty, healthier, and more sustainable food option. We want to offer more plant-based alternatives with a lower climate impact. Choosing plant-based food often impacts climate footprint less than animal-based options.
The plant-based hot dog will be available to try in IKEA stores across the UK and Ireland from Monday 16th October, for 85p. Find out more about the IKEA food offering in the restaurant, bistro, or Swedish Food Market here.
