PORTUGUESE WINE

ALDI’S BEST-SELLING PORTUGUESE WINES

Sunday 20th Aug 2023 |

Portuguese wines have carved out a reputation as being high quality and great value, so it’s no surprise that Aldi has become a go-to destination for vino loving Brits.

With a total of seven Portuguese tipples on offer, and prices starting from just £4.79, Aldi’s range is both award-winning and best-selling.

In fact, the supermarket’s Douro offering is so popular, it accounts for two thirds of all Douro red sold in the UK, with almost three bottles selling every 60 seconds1. Hardly surprising given the Animus Douro was awarded ‘Best Portuguese Red’ in global wine competition, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, beating hundreds of others to the spot.

But the top selling tipples don’t stop there. Another wine that flies off the shelves is the supermarket’s Animus Vinho Verde – it is so delicious it sells almost three bottles a minute.2

Sam Caporn, Aldi Wine Expert and Mistress of Wine, provides some reasoning as to why Portuguese wine is growing in popularity in the UK:

“The beauty of Portuguese wines is that they are made from a treasure trove of unique, indigenous grape varieties and produce wines that you really can’t buy from anywhere else in the world.

They are characterful, distinctive, delicious, and surprisingly good value, which helps to explain why Portuguese wine is having ‘something of a moment’ and stepping into the spotlight.

From a beautifully light Vinho Verde to a classic red from the famed Douro region – now producing still red wines that are becoming as revered as the fortified Ports it has so long been famous for.

The variety and breadth of the wines also means that there is a style for everyone.”

Aldi has shoppers covered when it comes to a drop of Portugal this summer – so there is não need to go elsewhere.

Aldi’s award-winning Animus Douro Red (£6.49, 75cl) offers notes of red fruits, plum, and cedar; perfect for those among us who love a ripe, structured, and flavourful style.

For those who enjoy a refreshing white, Aldi’s Animus Vinho Verde (£4.79, 75cl) is fresh and vibrant with notes of herbs, lime, banana, a light spritz and liquorice, fennel and nectarine. Gorgeous as an aperitif “and a fabulous alternative to an Aperol Spritz”, according to Sam.

A Portuguese delight, the Mimo Moutinho Lisbon Red (£5.99, 75cl) boasts rich notes of plums, cherries, blueberries, and blackberries. With a hint of cherry blossom on the finish, this soft and easy drink is a perfect summer red. What’s more, priced at just £5.99, shoppers can save 25% (£2) compared to alternative brand Porta 6 – saúde!

Aldi’s Mimo Moutinho Dão Rosé (£5.99, 75cl) is salmon pink in colour with subtle aromatics, while the palate has plenty of red and black cherry fruit with ripe blueberries too. Dry with a fresh, long finish.
