You Can Apply to Live on Your Own Swedish Island for a Year
The idea of escaping to your own private island has long felt like a far-fetched luxury reserved for billionaires and Bond villains. But in 2026, Sweden is quietly turning that fantasy into something far more attainable – inviting everyday travellers to apply for the chance to live on their own island for an entire year.
Home to more islands than any other country in the world – an astonishing 267,570 in total – Sweden is offering five carefully selected islands to international visitors as part of a new initiative designed to redefine what luxury travel really means. And spoiler: it’s not about champagne on tap or infinity pools. It’s about space, silence, clean air and the kind of deep rest that’s hard to come by in modern life.
The campaign, called Your Swedish Island, taps into a growing global desire to slow down and reconnect with nature. Recent research suggests that travellers are increasingly craving quiet escapes, fresh air and access to unspoilt landscapes. In fact, a global survey found that more than three quarters of people would consider visiting a Swedish island, while many admitted the idea of escaping the crowds – and even everyday relationships – was deeply appealing.
Rather than selling exclusivity, Sweden is championing simplicity. Each of the five islands is remote enough to offer genuine peace and privacy, yet close enough to local communities for essential supplies – whether that’s picking up groceries, sending post, or joining in with traditional Swedish celebrations like Midsummer. It’s about experiencing solitude without isolation, and nature without completely disconnecting from real life.
“Sweden has more islands than any other country in the world, and we want to invite people to enjoy what may be the most genuine form of luxury: the peace and tranquillity of nature on your own island,” says Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden. “This is about offering space to breathe, think and reset.”
Travellers keen to take part are invited to submit a short video explaining why they deserve the chance to become the temporary custodian of one of the five islands. Successful applicants will win a trip to Sweden and the opportunity to spend a year immersed in the country’s wild, restorative landscapes.
And even if you don’t land one of the coveted islands, Sweden’s message is refreshingly inclusive. With thousands of islands scattered across its lakes, archipelagos and coastline, there’s no shortage of peaceful places to explore – whether you’re after a digital detox, a slow travel adventure, or simply a break from the noise of everyday life.
In a world where travel often feels rushed and over-curated, Sweden’s invitation is simple: come, slow down, and experience what real escape actually feels like.
