Wellness is something a lot of us have spent more time focussing on over the past few years. Google Trends data shows a steady increase in wellness-related searches and the industry is predicted to be worth a staggering $7 trillion by just 2025 (Global Wellness Institute).
As there are so many aspects to wellness, from physical health to spiritual, we’ve seen plenty of trends emerge in recent years. In 2020 while living through the height of the pandemic we saw a spike in interest for ways to support the immune system, while this year there has been more of a focus on workplace wellbeing.
But what do we have in-store for 2023? Pukka Herbs are here to share their insights and show us four trends they predict will surge in popularity next year. So if you’re looking to make some healthy lifestyle changes in 2023, take inspiration from these emerging wellness trends.
Choosing teas for wellness benefits
Herbal teas have been growing in popularity across the globe for a while now as they provide a light and refreshing alternative to coffee — plus there are such a variety of flavours to choose from! As well as this, people are starting to choose teas based on wellness benefits and we’re therefore likely to see this trend grow even further in 2023 (Linchpin).
Next year consumers are predicted to become more interested in organic herbal teas with carefully considered blends of herbs. We’re expecting to see a rise in the popularity of herbal teas as a whole in 2023, but some particular flavours and ingredients to look out for are:
- Green tea: The global green tea market is predicted to rise from around £16,329 million in 2022 to £20,996 million in 2028 (MarketWatch).
- Cinnamon tea: Packed with flavour and caffeine-free, this drink is already rising in popularity according to Google trends data.
Focus on gut health
If you’ve been on TikTok recently, you may already know about the emerging gut health trend. On the app, videos under #guthealth have an impressive 2.8 billion views and counting. The gut has a major impact on our overall health, and the emergence of this trend shows us that people are starting to pay more attention to its importance. With this trend, we’ll see a focus on consuming gut-healthy foods that contain good bacteria, like yogurt and kefir, as well as incorporating Apple Cider Vinegar which is known for its potential digestive benefits. Additionally, we’ll also find ways that we can aid our digestive system, such as by taking the appropriate supplements and drinking digestion-supporting teas.
Our mental wellbeing can have a major impact on our gut health too. Stress in particular can have a big influence on our digestive system so this trend will also promote natural ways we can lower our stress levels, such as by meditating, getting active and journalling.
Ashwagandha
If you haven’t already heard of ashwagandha, you’ll likely know about it in 2023. Google Trends data shows a sharp increase of search interest in this herb over the past few months, and this is predicted to rise even further in the coming months and years. Ashwagandha can provide support both physically and emotionally. It is most well-known for aiding relaxation, but it can also help us settle into healthy sleeping patterns and even act as an aphrodisiac!
As well as being a versatile herb for wellbeing, ashwagandha can be consumed in a number of other ways. The supplement is commonly found in capsules and sometimes powders, but it can also be enjoyed in a cup of herbal tea alongside other calming ingredients like chamomile and lavender.
Eco-friendly wellness
Many of us have been focussing more and more on ways we can be more sustainable in our everyday life. This covers everything from the way we get around and how we recycle to the products we buy. In fact, according to Deloitte’s 2022 sustainability study, 40% of respondents tried to make more sustainable choices by buying from brands that have environmentally sustainable practices and values. So in 2023 we’re likely to see consumers prioritise wellness products that they believe to be better for the planet.
There are a few ways we might see environmentally-friendly wellness trends emerge next year. Sustainable packaging is an important issue for consumers, with the Deloitte study finding that 54% of respondents felt schemes to reduce plastics and packaging would help them lead a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. For wellness trends, this might look like opting for herbal tea without polypropylene in the tea bags and using wellness brands with 100% recyclable packaging. We might also see an increase of people choosing wellness companies which source ingredients for their foods, drinks and supplements in an ethical and sustainable way.
“2023 is set to be a big year for wellbeing trends as the wellness industry continues to grow. Many of these trends can have a positive impact on our overall wellbeing. Take protecting gut health for example, which won’t just impact our physical health but our mental health too.
