2023 home fitness trends to wake up your workout

Wednesday 14th Dec 2022 |

As this year comes to a close, it’s time to look ahead to 2023 and think about the home fitness trends that will be taking off in the next 12 months.

A recent survey on people’s fitness preferences noted that 61% of respondents were working out at home, so it’s safe to say that home fitness is going to remain at the top of many people’s preferences in terms of how they remain active (Garage Gym Reviews).

Here, the experts at Fitness Superstore have brought together some of the key fitness trends on the horizon to take inspiration from to improve and enjoy your fitness journey in 2023.

Low-intensity workouts

During the last few years, there has been more of a focus on walking and this has led to many people realising that they can find ways to keep fit and active without always doing a high-intensity activity (Government Statistics). This has not shown signs of going away, and so in 2023 we will see more people experimenting with lots of lower-intensity cardio exercise throughout the week to add to their harder workouts.

This means that lots of walking (outdoors and using a treadmill), as well as other exercises like yoga and Pilates will come more to the forefront and become more popular. This is a great development as it means that sport and fitness are becoming more approachable and accessible to lots of people, so don’t be afraid to join in on this and include some lower-intensity activities throughout your week.

One aspect of fitness that has become more and more important through the years is self-care. Many people choose to work out for mental health reasons, especially Gen Z, with 43% of them citing mental health as a top reason for staying active in a recent survey (Garage Gym Reviews). So, take inspiration from this trend and use the new year as an opportunity to think about how your fitness routine can support your mental health and be geared towards self-care.

The first way you can do this is to make sure that you are always warming up and cooling down to protect your body from strain. If you are lifting weights at home, ensure that you have some lighter weights available that you just use for warming up to ensure that your muscles are prepared for when you move on to more demanding weights. You can do this using adjustable weights, to ease yourself into heavier ones more gently.

You can also bring some activities into your fitness routine that focus you on your mental health more, such as guided meditation and journalling, which can both offer you a space to relax, focus, and even reflect on your fitness routine itself to see if it’s working for you. Breathing exercises are another addition that can help reduce your stress, clear your mind, and improve your performance during your workouts.

Technology

When you’re putting together your workouts, some technology can really help with making your routines more effective, so it’s no wonder these gadgets are popular (Statista). It’s also often useful to use sports technology at home to help give you more metrics and direction to curate your activities. Gadgets like a heart rate monitor will allow you to see when your heart rate is elevated, meaning you can better understand what activities are helping your cardiovascular fitness improve.

As well as the helpful tech of heart monitors, smart watches and foldable treadmills will bring a convenience to your workouts that can help you commit to your routine more easily and maximise your exercise time. So have a look around and see what additional technology you haven’t used or explored yet, and consider how it can bring an extra dimension to your fitness.

There are many apps that can help you structure your home workouts, and a lot of fitness equipment will let you take classes from the console of the machine. Other examples are JRNY and IFIT, as well as many other virtual programmes.

home fitness trendsAt home fitness spaces

With home fitness and workouts growing in popularity in the last few years, next year will likely see many people taking things to the next level and including dedicated spaces in their homes for fitness (Statista). This might be a spare bedroom, office space, or even an outbuilding that can be commandeered into a fitness area.

You can take this as inspiration by thinking about how you might reorganise your space in 2023 to be more optimised for working out. If you have a spare room that can be utilised, this is a great time to clear it out and rearrange it so that you can bring some fitness equipment in. Or, you might want to look where you can rearrange your living space so that you can create a dedicated corner for working out.

If you need to maximise your space, foldable equipment is great for providing a home gym area without things getting too cluttered, and thinking about storage solutions for dumbbells and other equipment can really make the difference in your home fitness space looking tidy and relaxing.

“2023 is set to be another exciting year in terms of fitness trends, as there is plenty on the horizon. Take the new year as an opportunity to invest in some new tech or equipment to augment your current workouts, and look into options for home workouts such as apps and programs that will offer you some structure. This can be great for those less confident who want to solidify their plans.

“Additionally, lots of workouts are going to use dumbbells in different ways in 2023, with the popularity of exercising at home leading many to find new and more imaginative ways to exercise. Remember that you can use dumbbells as part of cardio exercises to keep them interesting and to introduce some strength elements. So have a look around for different ways you can make use of this simple piece of equipment, as there’s lots to be gained from it.

“You might also want to expand your at-home strength training equipment with expanding dumbbell sets, compact racks, Olympic weight sets and much more.”
