Swaptober Fest Brings the UK’s First Alcohol-Free Oktoberfest to Leeds

The UK’s first alcohol free Oktoberfest is set to take place next week as the UK continues to see a growing interest in sober socialising.

With hundreds expected to attend the landmark event, dubbed Swaptober Fest, named as people will be swapping their traditional beer for an alcohol-free version, it’s the latest in a series of sober events happening up and down the country, from alcohol free raves to mindful mingling.

Recent data has shown a huge 67% increase in sober events* and 38% of UK drinkers are now choosing low or no alcohol options, with more than 1 in 10 doing so regularly**.

Hosted by award-winning alcohol-free beer brand, Mash Gang and taking place in one of the country’s most historic breweries, The Tetley in Leeds, Swaptober Fest will see people swap swapping hangovers for a clear head. However, one they won’t be swapping is a lively atmosphere and a great time with friends and family, revellers will take part in all the traditional Oktoberfest fanfare from live oompah music, authentic bratwurst and a host of Bavarian themed games and challenges.

Recent trends such as Zebra Striping, where people alternate between a full strength and alcohol-free drinks, have further fuelled the demand for high-quality alcohol-free options at events which traditionally centred around alcohol consumption.

Swaptober Fest comes as data reveals a huge 60% decline in Google searches over the past 5 years for alcohol focused events during October, despite popular booze fuelled Oktoberfest events taking place at the start of the month.

Chris Hall, Brand Manager of Kirkstall Brewery the current incumbent of The Tetley, commented on the event; “We’re delighted to host our friends at Mash Gang for a unique spin on Oktoberfest at the iconic Tetley building, the home of brewing in Leeds. The growing demand for no- and low-alcohol products across our retail and sales channels is a clear indicator that customers are looking for more options when it comes to going out and seeking new experiences. This event is a great way of showcasing both the spirit of Oktoberfest and the vibrant sense of fun at the heart of the Mash Gang brand.”

Jo Taylor, Global Marketing Director at Mash Gang, said: “We’re confident that Mash Gang is alcohol-free beer like no other, and stands up to the best beers on the market. So, swapping alcoholic beer for ours doesn’t feel like any compromise. At Mash Gang, we’re all about having a party, getting together with friends and family over a great tasting beer and making memories, so we wanted to throw a big party this Sober October to show that swapping the booze doesn’t have any impact on the vibes. It’s guaranteed to be a night people won’t forget, with a big Bavarian atmosphere, live music, great food and exceptional beer – and even better, they won’t wake up with a hangover the next day.”

Mash Gang, is encouraging all to come down and experience a sober socialising event, as what was once seen as a niche movement, steps confidently in the mainstream drinking culture. Swaptober Fest will be taking place on Thursday 16th at The Tetley, Leeds and is free to attend.
